Just trying to gauge some interest in this. I haven't looked into what the mail order PCMs run so I can't give set in stone prices. What I would like to know, is is this something that anyone would be interested in? Custom tunes that is. I could do complete wideband tunes, or simple transmission changes, fan settings and the like. These are the vehicles I will be able to tune.

Supported Vehicles (http://www.hptuners.com/products/vcmsuite_vehicles.php)

So lets here it people, is this something that would be worth while to you?

Yes, If the price was right

I'm not 100% sure what I could do it for as of yet. What are the mail order PCMs going for?

if the price is right id do it

Well I looked real quick on PFYC.com and it seems a basic tweaked PCM goes for $100 and Digital Horsepowers tuner goes for $400.

I could probably do basic tweaks to Shift tables, fans etc. for about $150. Probably run a full wide band tune around $225-250. All depends on really what has been done to the vehicle. Keep in mind these would be GAOC pricing.

I'm interested ... could it be done 'out of the car'? ... for example, could I (or others) simply send you the computer and have it changed?

biggnome
02-04-2007, 12:35 PM
I probably could rig up a system to do it that way. But then it will be just another generic tune that helps some but doesn't fully maximize the cars potential.

Just a thought Tim ... I would prefer, if you could do it, to do it while I am there ... maybe to a second computer installed so I can keep the original, is that a possibility as well for me?

biggnome
02-04-2007, 12:56 PM
I could tune a second computer so that you can swap them out.

Do you have any experience tuning modified or stock Grand Ams? What if the tune needs to be redone because the results were not right?

do you have an unlimited credit setup, or are you having to pay for credits as you do each car?

Grand Ams no, Head/Cam LS1s yes. Same principles, the V6s are easier to tune because there are less things to get you into trouble.

Purchasing credits as I go. I have the hardware that sits so I figured I'd help out some GA owners get the most out of their cars.

... I would suspect if Tim can't do it, in terms of mechanical or electrical or computer tuning, you don't need it  ... wonderful thing, "General-ly" speaking

If more guys tune the 6's in a shop atmosphere it would help us all: Having a tuned car will not only bring your mods to life, a "PROPERLY TUNED" car is also much nicer to the environment!! Good all around for everybody. Also helps keep support alive for the v6's in the tuning programs and communities.

How much can you add the my GTO? Curious on that.

pfft... what do you care, ure not comin

But uh, I can tell you this much... HPTuners is THE authority on gm v8 motors (as the guy tuning my ga this week pretty much only does the LSx guys). I'm willin to bed he could get a lot if you have the right parts already installed :)

i'd be interested could you also change my computer from automatic setting to 5-speed since im going to have a check engine light on until i have a dealership flash with a new vin. This would be like kills two birds with one stone.

Well if you had a setup like mine, you'd be looking at around 400 RWHP/RWTQ.

Standard tune usually nets ~20RWHP/RWTQ. This is with no power enhancers. Heads/Cam etc.

One way or another I'm going to have a Tech2 with me so I can do any programming updates prior to tuning. As far as switching from an auto to a manual, I think the boys at HPT can make the corrections and send me back the file to upload.

It depends if they locked it or not. I could do much more with the original if you still have it. I know for a fact that that wouldn't be locked.

To date: Patriot Performance Heads, Patriot Cam 226 duration, Complete exhaust: Kooks LT's and Spintech Side exit, home built intake, LS7 clutch, Drag bags, Drag radials. I think theres some other stuff that I can't remember at the moment. I think I may be able to hit 11's with the current setup. I can't believe how much the stock clutch was slipping.

Tim

Edit: Forgot to mention all was installed and tuned by me.

what kinda stuff can u do to the stock ecm? how much would it cost? would i have to run 93 octane?

I can do most anything that needs to be done to get the car to run at its peak efficiency. As far as cost, doing basic parameter changes ie. fan settings, trans shift points, speed limiter etc. will be $150. Complete wideband tunes I'm going to go with $225. These will include previous listed adjustments plus tuning the maf table fixing the overly rich PE tables and ringing out all I can out of the vehicle. And if you don't want to run 93 octane, don't have it in your tank when it's tuned. It can be tuned for what ever octane fuel you would like to run. I don't suggest running any higher than 87 in a stock motor anyways. Higher octane burns slower and in a lower compression engine as in the GAs, the unburned fuel would collect on your intake and valvetrain and cause driveability issues later on down the road.

Hoping not more than an hour or two a car. You wouldn't believe how much time I have into mine. But when you're dealing with a heavily moddified car like mine, everything changes. Bolt on cars are like a nice sunday walk in the park compared to cam, heads and the like.

As long as it's a bolt on car, I can optimize what you've got and clean up some tables. If the motors been opened up, I don't think I'd have enough time to tune that to my liking.

Sorry to hear about it. You shouldn't be apologizing to me. Look on the bright side, my girlfriend got laid off a couple weeks ago and now she's got a new job with better pay and less responsibilities. It all will work out.

thanks for the encouragement. I have quite a few job offers on the plate already and I have an interview the morning I leave for albany. Once my swap is done I will need a tune. I could go to a dealer to get a 5-speed reprogram but I would much rather spend a bit more and get a good tune with it. If it is still something you would be willing to do then I could make a drive out. This is still on my plans for the summer since I have been collecting parts since last october.

Tim I would like to thank you in the name of the Club for everything you've done for everyone out there.

Few people know this but Tim was up late EVERY night during the meet doing his best to tune as many people's cars as possible. When you were drinking? Tim was tuning cars. Having lunch at the show and shine? Tim's tuning cars. Waiting in the staging lanes? Tim's tuning.

I know most of the people you tuned the car for are extremely happy with their results and I know just how much work you've put into it.

You are an asset to our community and a damn nice guy to boot, much more than any sponsorship could ever buy.

I'd like to say it was my pleasure to help those that I could. I know I didn't have time to help everyone and for that I'm sorry. I'm looking into now if it will be feasible for me to do some more tuning at the Northeast meet in NJ this coming November. For those that I missed and others that didn't have the spare money, PM me and let me know if you would still like this done.

Drove undreds of miles today and not even a tiny issue. I too am extremely happy with not only what Tim did to my car, but the fact that he was there and willing to continue making adjustments if I wanted them through the weekend. The fact that he got my car doing 15.48 stock is amazing! Thanks again man.

I'll testify to the tune on Jason's bone-stock Grand Am, especially since it was me that made the 15.4 second run in it. Tim's tune really woke up the car, I only wish I had some money to have mine done.

Tim, your dedication to your customers was noted by everyone, and the results speak for themselves. You're da man!!!!!! :toast:

99GrandAMSE

Tim, you 'da man!! :)

Even though my car 'technically' wasn't faster than last year (15.589 last year to a 15.621 this year), it was slightly hotter this year so that will certainly cause an issue. In addition, my run this year was with 3/4 tank of regular gas (compared to 'almost empty' tank of supreme last year) and I am not much more consistent being I can race in 'D' instead of '2' and shifting into '3'.

All I can say it my car is totally different now than it was when it comes to pulling through the gear ... and, the lack of speed limiter is nice ;) (not going to elaborate but the needle was ALMOST pinned and still going, GPS confirmed too :D) ... thanks man!!! :)
