does anyone know if it would be hard to install an aftermarket cd player in my 93 grand am? i just dont want to take the thing apart and run into some problem.is there any special wiring that needs to be done, or is it a simple snap of a connector to the radio?

can u match colors, and work a pair of cutters, cirmpers and strippers? Then u should do just fine. All u have to do is match the colors of the aftermarket radio's harness with a wiring harness from walmart or where ever. Also u need a dash kit and an antenna adapter. Just go to crutchfield.com and they have videos and instructions and stuff. Anyway good luck and come back with any questions.
Peace,
Andrew

For that generation, its not difficult, it's just that you have to remove alot of your dash. For the most part, you just have to have a dash kit, and the converter harness, and it's just snap in, no splicing under the dash (Unless someone else cut them).
You'll have to remove the glove compartment, the lower kick-panel under the driver side, then the center part where the CD player will be. There are a number of Torx screws and about 2 phillips head screws in the dash removal. Also, have a set of socket wrenches ready.

My guess is you never attemted this before. buying the kit from crutchfields give you all the parts, not the tools though, to do the job plus they will help with the installation. It may be easier to just have a shop install it. Plus any worthwhile cd player will probally want speakers less than 14 years old

on a scale of 1-10 its about a 2 (for a first timer) Disassembly of the dash is the hardest part...and its still not bad at all.

Ditto on the speakers. The 1992-1995 use paper cone delco's as stock equipment. I blew my door 4x6's out within about a month of installing the head unit. :roll2: They're meant for the frequency range and Wattage of the stock units, which compared to most aftermarket units... sucks.
The replacement of the speakers however, is even more of a pain in the ass. Front speakers require full removal of the door panels (Remember, when removing the sail-pieces, that they do have a plastic clip! Otherwise, you'll be supergluing them back together.)
The rear 6x9's are more annoying as you have to tear apart the rear to get at them. You need to remove most of the trim, as well as the entire rear seat (Seatbelts require a T-50 inorder to take out too).

Disassembling the dash shouldn't even be hard. Sure, it may be a bit time consuming and once in a while frustrating if you can't find where a screw is hiding, but it's pretty easy. The 92-95s sound like about the amount of work it took for a teacher's mid-late 80s Oldsmobile 88, the chrome dash strip, the glove box, the dash panel, the lower panels, etc. Just remember what went where and you'll be fine.

Really? Can't you get to them from the trunk? I hadn't looked at it real close yet, but my Blaupunkt Monterrey MP35 from Crutchfield should arrive today, and once I get that in, the speakers are next. I found a set of Blaupunkt PCXB693 for a good deal, so I may pick those up, haven't even tried messing with the door panels yet, that will be more of a spring project, its too cold to mess around with that much yet.
Anybody got recommendations for front speakers for a 92-95, I just want to make sure I get something that fits in nice.

I thought that I could, but the screws are from up top. The speaker hangs down into the trunk, but you cannot access the screws through the trunk. You have to remove that panel to access the heads.
As far as the fronts, 4x6 is what you'd use if you do not want to deal with trying to convert it for components. I was rather lazy and took this route... But I'm sure there are probably brackets somewhere for you to put in component speakers.

I just opened my package from crutchfield and noticed they are having a heck of a sale on the Blaupunkt ProComponent Series, so I'll probably pick up 4x6s and 6x9s from that series, should go pretty well with the new Head Unit. Also, the big booklet of instructions shows exactly what you just said screws from the top and you have to take off a ton of parts. Oh well, once its a bit warmer I'll pull all that stuff apart.
