Is there a huge difference in the alternator bolt on patterns between a 90 and a 92?

Um, also along with this thread. I am wanting to swap engines in the future possibly, put in a 6cyl in place of the 4, would that be possible. I would be taking the tranny and engine from a new Grand Am, possibly a 99 GT? I know there are definitely space differences, but would that be possible?

FYI: New here.

for the first question if they are the same motor they will be the same but if not then you would have to specifiy witch motors the are to give you an awnser to awnser the second question you can do a 3400 swap from a 99 they are the same size as the 3100 that are found in the 92-95 models

Well I bought a custom alternator for a 92 Grand Am SOHC 2.3L, but there is a 90 engine in there. SOHC 2.3L. So yeah, it doesn't seem to want to bolt on. Thanks for the news with the 99 GT engine, because I am wanting to make the car a little more powerful and louder. Give it the sleeper appearance. This is also my project car while I go up to college next year. When I come back, I will find things to do with it, and make it alot better than it was when I got it.

What's a custom altenator? If the alt. is for that engine, it should look like the old one. Only more powerful or prettier

I'm planning on putting a bunch of car audio into my grand am, and figured I should put a bigger alternator. So I had one custom built, but told the guy 92 instead of 90. So I was wondering how different the two are in how they bolt on so I will know if it will fit properly. I'm going from about 105 amps to 250 amps, so definitely bigger.

Thats a powerful alternator how much stuff are you putting in there i have a High Output 190 amp hitachi alternator and i have a 2500watt sound system and dual 7" screens with a ps2 and a 1000watt power inverter and exterior/interior lighting and i am having no problems

My goal is to avoid dimming lights as much as possible. I'm only doing a 1600 watt system with a red top under the hood and a yellow top in the trunk. Plan on doing the big 3 and of course the alternator.

The alternators are the same until 96, and should even be 'clocked' the same on all 2.3's.

A V6 swap would be too much work... cut/weld engine/trans mounts, engine harness, PCM, gauge clusters, etc. Stick with the 2.3 family... a 2.3 HO can put out more than the V6 anyway.

I'll prolly just redo the exhaust in the future and make it dual instead of single, get two dual 3 inch tips, stainless steel, and get some GT tags from the junk yard and pop them on there.

EDIT: What are some performance things I can do to the engine to get some more horse out of it?

Any other suggestions people? Oh, and I know you said no to thew putting a 99 GT engine in, well what about just going to the V6 from my model? Would that also not be worth it at all?

A little less work but not by much.

Well the alternator is in, thanks for your suggestions. Didn't know that the original size was only 65 amps, so it looks like I increased the output by 4x. Wow, big increase. Mechanic said I could put stuff from the 99 and up on the car, mainly the bumpers, but I don't know how good that would look.

Glad it is in. I hope you upgraded the wiring and the fusible link. You should be running 00 or 02 guage battery wires.

I think you mechanic meant to say, you can add some parts from pre 99 GA's

No, he had the front and back bump from a GA GT behind his shop. I know it is at least 99 and up because my friend's mom has a 99 GT, and it is the same bumpers. I plan on running all 1/0 gauge wire for the big 3 and putting a battery in the trunk, as well as changing the starting battery to a red top.

See my previous post.

No less work - he would still have to cut/weld mounts.

Must have been the wrong alternator... the OEM alternator should be at least 105 amps.

Nothing from a 99+ fits directly.
