Its a well known fact that a 5-speed swap to a V6 is possible. Having said that....
I'm not sure the year range they were made, but I was on ebay looking at Fiero stuff, and it turns out that in 1986, there were V6 Fieros with a Muncie 4-speed, available before the Getrag was.
Seeing as how a Fiero's mid-mounted engine setup is nothing more than a relocated GM FWD setup, swapping in a 4-speed in my GA would be pretty much the same procedure as the 5-speed swap, correct?
Im not sure if the axle design is different or if 5-speed axles from a newer GA will work or not, but its definitely something I'll be looking into.
I guess there's just something cool about that 3400 roar and shifting a 4-speed via a Hurst T-handle.....old school meets my GA.

Have you ever driven a car with a 4 speed manual?
The benifits of having more gears is that it keeps your RPMs closer to your peak HP for better performance.
So for example when shifting at 5500rpm with a 4 speed your RPM may drop to say 3200rpm, as where a 5 speed make drop to 3600 or a 6 speed to maybe say 4000, ect.
Not that those are accurate numbers, it all depends on gearing and tranny used, but just an example.

It's going to be harder to find the 4spd I'd imagine as well. 4-spd FTL.

Like John said. Odds are the gearing is going to be spread to far apart to really get a power advantage out of your GA. The more gears the better.

3400 motors are torquey as hell. The gears ratios are goin to be similar to theauto thats in there now. Essentially, Im just making an automatic a manual. I like the way the gears are anyway.....what other vehicles sold as a luxury compact can do 80 in 2nd?
As for finding the 4-speed, well, theyre easier to find than a V6 beretta tranny.

Im not doing this for performance, Im doing it because I want a manual.:)

I say give it a shot if you got the cash/skill/time, it certainly would be unique.

5-speed swaps have been done before. I think this would be a first....

205ft/lbs is 'torquey as hell'? All of your friends drive Honda's don't they? lol
Also, what luxury compact are you talking about? A Zephyr?
BTW, that manual, and your automatic won't be geared the same, so no, it won't be just like your automatic.
