Has anyone ever run staggered tires on a GA?? I know someone close to me selling a set of 16" staggered tires, all the tires are Sumitomo HTR's 50Z..... would be running them on stock wheels...

225/50/ZR16 & 245/45/ZR16

Just curious if this has been done...

Don't run staggered tires - it will cause a dangerous amount of oversteer... meaning the rear end will want to spin-out easily.

Different tire sizes front/rear. On a FWD car, it's a bad idea.

The stock rims are narrow for 225, way too small for 245's. Mostly, bad idea as Shawn said.

I thought that the V8 grand Prix's ran staggered tires form the factory?

the only thing you could do is have different sidewall thicknesses. Have like,example, 225/40/18 in the front and then 225/45/18 in the rear,you get the idea.

The only possible problem that could come up if theres a big difference is wheel speed sensors. The computer will see a difference in wheel speeds in the front versus the rear and could disable ABS

Haha wow, you just solved why my abs and trac hasnt been working... oh well thats okay, Im too lazy to pull fuse on abs when I autocross anyhow lol. thanks. now I know. Although it only acts up in the winter, so maybe the snow is making it do funny stuff?

If anything, run larger fronts and skinnier rears, like the GP GXP, but then again, that car is making 300 hp and 320 ft-lbs of torque on fWD and it needs it. On a ga, unless you making massive power, dont, and dont even think about running larger rears, cause one, its retarded, and 2, it looks stupid on a FWD

225 are stock width for 5th gen GTs. A 225 is ideal for a wheel that is 7" wide.

They do... but I'm sure the rear suspension is tuned for such a setup.

I believe the stock 5 spokes are 6.5". But they are definitely not the correct width for the stock tires. I think 7.5 is ideal, 7 is acceptable if you had them but not much of an improvement over stock.

On GTs the Goodyear RSA were 225/50R16s stock.

I've always followed a rough guide of
225 = 7" rim width bead to bead
235 = 7.5"
245 = 8"
It's not even close to being perfect, especially when plus sizing, but for most factory wheels with 15 and 16" wheels and tires it's a decent guide.

However saying a section width in millimeters equals to a specific width rim would be foolish. There are many other factors involved that change the idea rim width. For instance cars with a lower aspect ratios will have less sidewall flex which would make them less acceptable to mount on more narrow wheels. It would also reduce the ranges of widthd the tire could fit safely.

When I worked in a shop and had an abundance of tires at my disposal I would try various combinations out. My wheels were a factory 16x8 that came with 245/50R16s on Z28s. I played with everything from 225s to 255s and in various combinations front/rear. Best suited ended up being 245/50R16s front and 255/50R16s rear, both fit cleanly on the 8" wheel.

Just checked out Tirerack.com and you can veiw specs of each tire. You might want to head over and checkout what they suggest for 225/50R16s. While your at it also check 225s with different aspect ratios and you'll see how even they suggest different widths for different sized that sport a section width of 225mm.
