Well just put My new HU and Speakers in today sounds great
Deck Kenwood EZ-500
Rear Deck Blaupunkt GT 542
Front Blaupunkt GTc 542 Componet
I did a complete rewire of the system bit of a pain expesialy running the front speakers through the doors but was worth it. I'll put a sub and amp for sub in after the move need the trunk space. I'll post a pic of the deck later car's kinda messy right now and I'm just wiped from putting it in between the 30 MPH winds gusting up to 50MPH and My back I'm gonna go crash.

Just out of curiosity, how much room did u have left? The reason I'm asking is b/c i have 6.5" components w/ depth of 2.25, and there's been a lot of debate w/ the installer if its gonna fit. I bought them online, so I'm kindof stuck w/ them. :(

I'd say about a half inch you do know that you can get merta adapters so you can put the 6.5 in can't remeber what the link is but there is a link to crurchfields website with these adapters and other on line say you could get at autozone. if the guy installing them has a shop he should know about them. they say for either 95 or 98 and up cavilers and sunfires but everyone on here says that they will work in Grand AM's. I see you have a 99 do you have the monsoon system in it. can't remember if the 99's had them or not. I had monsoon in mine and thats why I did the rewire could'nt get speakers to work with factory wires.

Yes, I got the adapters. And it is a shop that the guy is the installer for that's putting the speakers in. I don't have the Monsoon system, I checked in the car, i just have the tweeter sails in the doors, so the components would work nice in it. thanks 4 ur help.

Well the debate isn't really going to go anywhere until you get the comps and see.
Is the installer working out of a shop? You could have him/her try one of their own speakers in the shop with a similar depth in your car or a similar car to see if it fits, otherwise just wait for them to get there.
You can always double up adapters or make your own baffle to get more depth but there is going to be a maximum depending on how the door panel is.
In my 97 with a 1/2" polycarbonate baffle, I was able to just squeeze in my Focal 165Vs which have a depth of 69mm (~2.7"). It was so close on the window side that I had to remove the rubber magnet covers on my speakers. It was so close on the door panel side that I had to dremel out a bit of the door panel so it didn't hit the surround under driver excursion!
So while I have no idea about 99+ cars, 2.25" sounds doable. ;)
