just thought i would post up some pictures of my LED dome and map lights. i still need to replace the floor lights, but i'll do that later. anyways i found these at pep boys, they have 5 different bulb adapters to fit any interior bulb. the only down side is that they are 30 dollars, i guess you pay for the convenience of plug and play.

the pics make them look more blue than they really are, they look white in person, heres the stock bulb on the right for a comparison

I wish my '04 had the stock floor lights, it would have been so much easier to just swap out the bulbs versus having to wire in two sets of cathodes.

The map lights are 194 bulbs (I used red WLED-x5 LED Wedge Base Bulbs from superbrightleds.com (http://www.superbrightleds.com/mini-wedge.html)) and I believe the dome light was a 212-2 or 44mm festoon bulb, something like this (http://www.superbrightleds.com/festoon.html).

Damn, that would have made things much easier, the 194 bulbs were a HUGE PITA to get to, took me over an hour to get them out of the mirror. You can see the bulbs on the right of this (http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a245/juggleboy720/IMG_0474.jpg) picture. And then here (http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a245/juggleboy720/IMG_0516.jpg) are the LED bulbs I used.

cool, i wonder why gm decided to change the types of bulbs mid-stream. how is the output on those leds? the ones i have are actually plates with 8 leds on them in the map lights and a plate with 12 leds in the dome light

The output is actually decent. It's dim in comparisson because I went with red but I like it, it's subtle but people always comment on it. The key is using the wide angle, multi-led bulbs so you get good light dispersal. I actually really like those plates like you have and if I was going to do white that's what I would have gone with probably.

This (http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a245/juggleboy720/Car/Interiorlighting.jpg) picture and this (http://s12.photobucket.com/albums/a245/juggleboy720/Car/?action=view&current=IMG_0635.jpg) one are with my old deck and don't really do the lights justice, but I really like how everything matches now (the new Kenwood has red lighting as well). I was worried it wouldn't be bright enough but especially with the floor cathodes on the whole cabin lights up pretty nice.

Superbrightleds (http://www.superbrightleds.com/1157.htm) for the map lights and the dome light but you'll want to check the bulb sizes for your year since they're probably different. Oznium (http://www.oznium.com/cathode-kit) for the floorboard cathodes but the install on those is obviously a little more work intensive. I did a super long-winded how-to for the cathodes here (http://www.gaownersclub.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=57760&highlight=cathode+install).

If I had to do it again I'd look into the led plates like smooth used for the dome light unless you're looking for a direct bulb replacement. They have those at Superbright under the festoon section. I like my dome light dim but it bugs some people.

I like my dome light off... Kind of sucks if a door isn't shut all the way or to find something, but with the roof being so low and the light being that close to me, it was too bright. Soon as I get off my lazy ass it'll have red lights in the kick panels, dome light, and angel eyes (if I get them) since I want demon eyes. I was looking at the superbrightled store from an earlier thread about lights in the General Maintenance (I think) section.

randy this kit came with enough leds for the dome light and the map lights?... some ppl say they have the 194 bulbs in their 02+... and if you have the festoon bulbs i guess my 99 has them too ... hmm

when i went to pep boys i saw this unversal kit... but it only seemed to have one plate w/ 12 leds on it...

Two things,

1- how do the LEDs handle the theatre dimming? Do they dim properly down to off like standard bulbs?

2- hows the light output with the white ones compared to stock?

My car doesn't have footwell lights. I'm thinking of getting two of the small led panels and putting on in the passenger footwell and another on the back of the center console to light up the rear passenger area. There's an inch or so of space between where the door swings and the cup holders are. I know that's a bit of overkill because I already have a lighted mirror and the dome with map lights so I don't need the light. I'm just scarred after being in a classic Cadillac that interior lights seemingly everywhere.

I thought something like this would be nice to add a light

1) the theatre dimming works as it should

2) the light output is far superior to the stock bulbs

Yes you have to take the glove box just to get to the dinky light, and the easiest way to remove the dome light is to just simply pull it off and when you go back to install it take the sunroof lining off and reach your hand in between the roof and the roof liner so you can hold the plastic peice thats attached to your dome light

btw i just put in my white WLED-x5 LED Wedge Base Bulbs from superbrightleds.com ... very nice... has a tiny tint of blue to it... replaced underneath the feet area... and the glove dept box (<-- took me like one hour to replace that one... gosh that was a pain to take out, i saw upside down on the passenger side seat w/ my head on the floor to get a better grip of the stupid bulb... finally came out that way) oh i also took at the 5 screws holding the gove dept box together too to losen the panel around it...

there is not much room for the license plate light as you already know, lol so what i used is a jamstraight 100 degree bulb w/4leds, fits perfect. its not super bright but it compliments the rest of my lighting well, i would like to eventually put 2 bulbs back there to make it a bit brighter.

Use a fuse puller to reach behind the bulb, sometimes it works, sometimes the bulb breaks when you squeeze the puller. If it breakes just squeeze like heck on the base that is left and force it out.

96-98 it is the same way... just pull it off gently holding it by the sides... and it's ALOT easier putting it back on then the 99+ ...

You have to reach in through the sunroof.

Oh k, so just open it up and reach in to hold it down?

DFizzle
04-19-2007, 06:31 PM
Yep, just take off the trim around the sunroof and reach under the headliner to hold the plastic plate down. I had a heck of a time and wasn't smart enough to think of the sunroof route so I looped some speaker wire around the plastic plate and down through the dome light and then plulled down on the wire and pushed up on the light and it snapped right in. Trust me that the sunroof way is MUCH easier.

Yeah, I feel like a complete moron in hindsight, but at the time there wasn't a THING online anywhere about how to deal with it so I worked with what I had. It only took a minute or so once I came up with the idea but I must have stared at the damn thing for 20 minutes trying to figure it out.

Anyway, don't mean to thread-jack, good luck getting the lights in.
