View Full Version : Speedometer LED
Oznium just came out with a new LED, Surface Mount PLCC-2 SMT LEDs made for "dashboard and gauge cluster illumination". Could I use these to change the color of my speedometer and other dash LEDs?

cool.
Too bad I know nothing about MCD, voltage or wavelength of LEDs.
I'm not trying to advertise, in case anyone thought I was. He's got a Scion xB and said they were popular with the xBs, tCs, xAs.

no you can't...your lights aren't what makes the gauges red...it's the gauges themselves. There is a film on the backside that is red and it can't be removed without ruining the gauges.

That is correct, however I was thinking of using these to illuminate custom plexiglass art. :)

You better have some tweezers, they are about 1/8" square.

Yes you can use them, but as Ryan pointed out the colored foil on the back of stock GA guage faces makes it "somewhat" pointless. If you used red it would probably look better than the stock reddish-orange IMO. Any other color is likely not worth the effort.
I have been using PLCC-2 LEDs for 2 years now in various applications (not just the car) and all my door/window, ETS & 4 way switcheshave red PLCC-2 LEDs in them. Still have to get around to doing the HVAC & guage cluster for a uniform look.
Don't forget to use resistors with LED's.
