i have a 96 grand am with a cracked windshield, my question is, how are these windshields held in. I can get a new windshield at a junkyard for $30 and I would like to change it myself but i won't try it if its glued in. Is it a rubber gasket or is it glued.

It's glued. Best left for the pros.

Depending on your state and what kind of insurance you have you can get it for free!!!! Thats what I did when mine got a huge crack in it.

I would have someone do it. When I had mine done it cost me like 120. After watching them it seems like something better left to the pros.

I don't know how much yours will be considering mine is a 2000 and yours is a 1996. So I would check around.

I've replaced glued in windshields before. You need a strong line to cut the glue. Clean out the hole. Get a roll of glue and stick it in the hole.
If I'm doing by myself, I use wax paper between the glass an glue until I get it in the right place, then pull out wax and press into place.

I assume you don't have glass coverage since you have an old car

well just had it replace thursday may 24 by safelite auto glass, it ran me 260 dollars total to have it changed. Then just had it replaced again today for free (comes with a life time unconditional warranty) because two days after it was first replaced I noticed a stress crack, it started forming from the bottom edge(from under the middle of the wiper cowl) and was slowly creeping its way up the middle.

They must have installed a windshield that had a chip at the bottom and the glue pulled it apart. But anyway it was replaced for free so Im happy.
