My 96 Grand Am GT stalls out when running for a while. Temperature stays in middle of guage. It doesn't give any indication just stalls. Have to let it sit for a minute for it to restart. When it restarts it bogs down when put in gear and stalls when gas pedal is pushed. also idles rough when restarted. Check engine light has been on for a while now before problem started same with ABS light. Can anyone please help me?
Thanks Kimmie

Your car is just new enough to be able to run on a scan tool. You could have fuel problems such as a partially clogged fuel filter. You could have dirty air intake or a bad sensor.
do you have the ability and desire to work on your car? Have you done any troubleshooting so far.

btw, my little one goes by Kimie

my dad put it on one of those hand held computers, it brings up all kind of stuff about transmission. was trying to narrow it down as I can't really afford to try all kinds of different stuff

Put it back on the hand-held scanner, and post ALL the codes that come up.
If dad isn't available, go to AutoZone or Checker or such, where they'll plug in their scanner for free.
Just don't buy any parts 'til you report the codes back to us.

We like codes, they help us narrow down the problem and save you money. :D :D

How many miles on your 11-yr old car?
And what kind of tranny do you have, auto or manual?

:welcome: to GAOC!!

Since the SES light has been on prior to the issue, it's hard to say if it is related or not - additional codes may be present now thought. It would be most helpful if you could post those codes.

Common problem areas I would still suggest checking...
Battery terminals - see this thread:
http://www.gaownersclub.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=64635

The 2.3 and 2.4 are occasionally known for ignition system problems, so I would also check these:
-plugs (age, gap, type - use the stock AC Delco platinums and confirm gap)
-plug 'boots' (deterioration, signs of arching)
-IDI housing (micro cracks in the plastic, signs of arching, etc)

Other than those, it would be best to get those codes first.
