Ok my mom has a 99 Malibu with the 2.4 in it. She said that while driving all the sudden it made a bunch of noise and gave a ton of codes. Had it taken to a mech and they pulled it apart and said that the crank bearing had gone out. Now they are trying to sell her a used engine with 60k on it for 1100 and install it for 925.
Im just wondering if thats a good price for the parts.

Two grand for a installed engine sounds high to me.
Junk yards do the installation around my area. Maybe she can call around and get installed prices and guarantees.

Ahhh here is the problem. It blew up away from where she lives. About 250 miles away to be exact. She was going to my grandmothers cancer surgery and well yea.
Does that bearing usually fail?? IIRC the engine had about 113k on it.

bearings are bearings, some fail sooner than others.

It might be better to use the two grand to buy a newer car. I don't know if I would that much money into a eight year old car.

Well as of right now she cant afford a new car and she has had really bad luck with the cheaper cars off a cheaper lot. She has really bad credit but my grandpa just agreed to cosign for her for a new car. There is a place where she lives that is doing that 5000 for any trade in as long as its running deal and she is going to try to do that.

I say just go for it. It'll be a 99 with a motor that only has 60,000 miles on,not bad. Hell,I picked up my Grand Am used back in '02,only had 52,000 miles on it.

It depends on how the rest of the car is. If it needs struts, exhaust, brakes, etc, it might not be worth spending the money on a motor.

Nah everything else is in good working order. It needs a new A/C but my mom maybe drives it at most 20-40 miles a week so she just lives without it.
