View Full Version : Lim leaking again

So about a year ago, I did the infamous LIM gasket change. It worked great up until about two months ago, noticed the low coolant light. This past saturday I did an oil change. All under the engine was coolant (piss me off!). I'm thinking about putting some stop leak in it. I really only need the car to be functional until August, when it finally gets paid off.

Any thoughts as far as the stop leak goes? I would prefer not to change the LIM gasket again, as I dont feel like dealing with the hassle.

Any thoughts/ideas welcomed!

IMO, you haven't yet confirmed that the LIM gasket is leaking again.

Might be the heater core, heater hoses, water pump, a core plug ('freeze' plug) or other component of the coolant system.

Stop Leak, no matter the brand, will:
* Gunk up the system.
* Prolly not work on a leak as large as a LIM gasket (it is meant for pinhole leaks, and is very ineffective against wide leaks like gasket failures and cracks).

I would do a little more investigating, to determine if the leak is something more-easily fixed than the LIM gasket.

Good luck,
-Rick

If it was under the engine, I doubt it is a LIM. The LIM seperates oil from coolant... the coolant system is pressurized so if there was a LIM leak it would go into your oil. If it is under the engine (external) then you have a leaking hose, water pump, heater core, ect.

Try to get your hands on a pressure testing device. If by "under the engine" you meant in the oil pan, then yeah... that's a LIM.

A LIM can leak externally as well as internally. More often than not it will leak in and out.

I know its the LIM cause I have coolant in my oil and I can see a puddle of it on the engine (I forgot what its called, but it collects on the motor right by where the block goes on). Probably should have mentioned this earlier in the post.

I dont know how you guys do it, but I am fed up with any GM, particularly the Grand Ams. This car has been nothing but a pain in the a**. As soon as it is paid off, I'll probably put a torch to it!

Yeah, but the SOHC has its own share of problems

I think the only engines not to have too many issues in GA's were the 2.5L Tech IV Iron Duke, the 2.3L Quad 4 DOHC, the 2.4L Twin Cam, and the 2.2L Ecotec.

Anyways, themoo, what gaskets did you use in the first replacement? Did you use felpro gaskets and updated bolts (And updated torque specs)?

No problems so far... if anything does happen then I will end up with a DOHC.

You make a good point... if you re-use the same bolts you are very likely to be changing the gasket again before too long.
