I was wanting to change my transmission filter and fluid because i just rolled over to 102,000 miles. I was wondering if there is any tips of the trade and precautions. I flushed my coolant once not knowing what I was doing and didn't loosen the pressure vavle. Ended up dishing out some serious cash for a blown head gasket. DON"T WANT TO RUN INTO SOMETHING LIKE THAT AGAIN!!! So please help also, I was wanting to know if there are any referals for Lucas Transmission Fix and Power Steering Stop Leak. I just used a batch of Oil Stabilizer and use the Fuel Treatment religiously and stand by them with confidence. Thanks for any help.

It's not that hard. I've not done it myself, but I've seen it done. Just remember to change the pan gasket and use fresh fluid.

Do buy one of those ubiquitous repair manuals though. For only 15 bucks or so, they're good for pointers on the basics: i.e., brake pad/shoe replacement, oil change, fuel filter, tranmission service, etc...

I prefer Chilton's myself. I have the Hayne's for my GA and have found several glaring errors. I have the Chilton's from back when I had my '84 Cutlass Supreme, and thought it was better. But, if you really want to do it right, buy the GM repair manual. It's not cheap, but my mechanic recommended it, and he's one of those rare grease monkey whom you can trust.

Where would you get one of those?

In doing a few in the past. Watch the length of the bolts you remove. You should find longer ones and shorter ones.
Be sure to put longs back in longs and shorts in shorts.

I've gotten a piece of cardboard in the past drew the shape of the pan on it. Then pushed the bolts through the cardboard in the spot that represents that spot on the pan.

Take your time retightening the pan down. the more trips around the pan you make turning the screws a little at a time the more level the pan will tighten back down. Well don't over do it.

The shop manual can be ordered from Helm. They make the manuals for GM. You can get replacement owners manuals and the like from them. They aren't cheap but they offer the most detail and are what the dealer and shops use for repairs. I have one for another car I own and it is great material. If you just want basics then Chilton/Haynes are fine and $15. The Helm for your car is $120. Part # GMP99N. Check out www.helminc.com

You can also search e-bay for the shop manuals, I just picked up a set for my 92 project car for $35. It is a 3 manual set and in excellent condition.
