I have just recently purchased my 1992 Grand Am GT with a QUAD 4 H.O. 2.3L DOHC, 5spd
I oringally wanted to purchace some other cars like a civic or a S14. but i found this car for cheap.
it's got 101,000 miles on it and the timing chain is slapping the chain cover between 2100 and 3000 RPM's. plus sometimes a lil at idle.
I would like to make the car run around 12.8 - 13.4 in the quarter.
In your experence how much time effort and money would that cost me? and if thats my goal should i go with a different car?
I'm strapped for cash too.

everyone and their mother has a civic. i would stick with the GA... itll cost some cast to make it run 12's. parts for civics are cheaper. so do what you want. personally i would want to have a GA and make it look unique.

:agree:
everyone has a civic, but there's tons of parts, cheap parts for them. Not everyone races GA's, and it's going to be harder to do, too. So, really do you just want a car that can run 12's cheap, or do you want something different that can run 12's?

If your strapped for cash, your not gonna be able to run 12's even in a Civic. Just drive the Grand Am till the wheels fall off and you can afford a Z28 or something

you can make the quad4 fast. Your E.T.'s your shooting for are pretty low for a quad4 to achieve without boost though. if your strapped for cash, go junkyard shopping. Im not sure but I think 92's had the 3.94:1 ( good thing). do the familiar things ( exhaust CAI, chip it, weight removal) or hell, drop a set of cams in her. get the TRS header if you stick with N/A. Going fast costs, but the quad 4 is a good motor for going fast.

Making the Quad a 12 second engine is possible, but it takes a lot of work and a lot of money. The car wouldn't be streetable either, so unless you have another car to get you around, it's not exactly a good idea.
Don't get me wrong, you can make the Quad fast, but to get it into 12s you will more than likely need forced induction and alot of internal work.
