I would say probably because when whatever malfunction is happening the computor takes over and runs in limp mode, bypassing the system that is malfunctioning. My guess would be something in fuel management. Have it scanned and let us know the code.

Exactly as HeyDace said above ^^^^^.

And check/fix it as soon as possible, since running in 'limp-home' mode is killing your wallet (yer milage is terrible, about 15 mpg) and damaging some engine parts (the O2 sensor in particular).

What year is your car, and how many miles?
