For months I heard a sharp knocking sound in my 1996 Grand Am over bumps. My struts and spring were new. The sway bar and control arm were bushing and ball joints appear to be fine. I took the cotter pin out of the outer tie rod end and tightened the nut. It appeared to have spun loose alittle and stopped by the pin. I tightened both side and the noise went away and the steering was tighter.!!
You can get access to it by jacking the car up to get into the wheel well or take the wheel off. Just tighten as much as you can and try not to strip the nut ! make just you put the safety pin back in.
