Recently purchased a 1994 Grand Am SE for daughter. Runs great except for a loud knocking noise in engine. Appears to only happen when you rev engine up. Any suggestions?

That's hard to diagnose over the web without actually hearing it. Is it when you rev in neutral? In drive? Both? Have you opened the hood and rev'd the car up and gotten an idea from approximately where the noise is coming from? Off the top of my head, it could be your timing chain guides are worn and the chain is hitting the TC cover when you rev it up. That wouldn't be like a knocking more like a clanking maybe? How many miles and do you know if the TC was ever replaced? I noticed that most Quad 4's need the TC replaced right at 100,000miles.

Has been in drive. Have not n tried it in neutral. Noise appears to be coming from the head. The car has about 91,000 miles on it. Do not know if the TC has been replaced.

Have tried it in neutral. No knocking when the car is in neutral.

Id still go with timming chain<------- sorta a rata rata, then mabey lifters<------ light to med tapping, or in extreem cases you might have lost a rod and your pistion is out of wack and hitting the heads<----------- bad knock loud

Thanks for the information. Looks like we will start with the timing chain and take it from there.

:thanks:
