I'm pretty limited, i've only tried Boston, Pioneer, Alpine, Rockford, Eclipse, and Focal. I like them all. Right now i'm running with a 12" Boston G5 and I really like it. If I had more money I would like to try alot of other brands as well though. so many brands to choose from, but cash is limited :(

You got the best imo.... Kicker is always been my fav. I have 4 l7s in the back of my grand am and in the 2000 Grand AM I have 2 l5's.... in my eclipse I had 4 kicker comp cvr 10's
Favorite amp for those subs are kicker 750.0

I haven't heard a lot, but the best I have heard is my Kicker L5 12" I have in the GTI. Is that box in your pic sealed or ported? I'd like a sealed one instead of the side ported one I have. If it IS sealed (though i doubt it at that size), where did you get it?

Incriminator Audio Death Penalty 12" MEAN woofers, even off of 700WRMS it'll blow your mind. FI Car Audio BTL 12" is mean also. Another favorite would be Treo SSX 12" and Pierce Audio WMD 12" KILLER subs and very nice lookin' equipment. Oh, and Ascendant Audio Assassin 12". I'm a 12" kind of guy.

 The reference sub to whom? Futhermore reference doesn't mean something is the best, it's just some well-known benchmark to test other things against.
For example if a reviewer uses the W7 as a reference, he/she may review a sub and say "was better sounding and had more output in the lab, than the reference JL W7". :P

The BTL's will handle in excess of 2000WRMS, the only downfall of the 18's are the price $400 a peice, but for that price and the quality it's an amazing sub. People only say JL is the best out because they have only heard them, not many people have heard the 'no-name' 'non-mainstream' brands, which I would say would put any of the W7's to shit.

im a bit old school...my favorite SQ sub to date is the Aura Force 12. My Treo SS12 subs were some of the loudest subs ive heard while retaining decent sound Q.
If i had to find the best of both worlds go with Eclipse aluminum, JL W6 (old school), or Crystal CMP. all of these new brands are cool and all, but Ill stick with what I know.

Wow yeah those are all old skool alright! :) Kinda makes you feel old when you know all those subs eh? ;) Ppl talking about the Solo-X, when you might remember the original round Solo-Baric better.
I recall the CMPs that were really good were the CMPx2. Eclipse Alum I was never a huge fan, though I though they were at least a cool design. Those aluminum cones is certainly where Audiomobile made (and lost, lol) their money (though they called it something fancy-dance like ceramic alloy...). Remember them?
A lot of times you end up remembering a few things more fondly than they actually were good, lol. Like I remember thinking Orion XTRs were so awesome back in the day, yet hear one today and you're glad it's not still back then, LOL. In the time though, I guess they were decent.
But certainly some subs seem to transcend time, remaining impressive even many years after they were designed... I don't remember the Aura Force 12 being all that impressive, but the MR subs, now those things are still very impressive today, and they are from a while back. Plus they weren't exactly common then, and they are pretty darn rare today.
Though it's at least a little dated now, I'm still quite happy with my e12a--it's still a very decent performer :) In fact I even own another one I bought last year, that I planned on putting in my car at some point, but it's still in the basement.

well the force 12 wasnt known as a crazy expensive sub, it cost $150 when new, ran 250 wrms. it was just a very clean and accurate sub.
yea, the round solo barics were a favorite of mine back in the day.
remember the cerwin vega stroker? it was the sub of all subs way back when.
oh, another favorite su b of mine was the PPI pro series, flat cone sub. that sub was lost on the buy out of PPI. It was liquid cooled, which made a mess when it had problems.

i love JL cause out of all the different kinds or subs i have heard and owned (JL, Alpine, Rockford, Pheonix Gold, Kenwood, Pioneer, Infinity, Cerwin Vega, Clarion, Kaption, Concept, etc.) JL has the cleanest sound in my opinion... i few years ago i owned 2 12" 12W0's - yes 12W0's - and they were the cleanest sub i have heard... they had deep, hard hitting bass and they never missed a beat... i still regret selling them... damn you university!!

surprised that the 18 can only handle 500 more watts than the 12 but other wise looks like a solid sub i'd go for the 12's with the small power handling difference.
