View Full Version : Grooved rotors

Alright changing the brake pads, rotors are fine except for this one. Front passenger side. I'm pretty sure the pins were sticking and the pads wore incredibly uneven, as all my other pads are fine except for this one. Anyway what to do about the rotor, I posted in the handling section the other day before I actually had everything off, and knew how it was. All the other rotors are fine but due to the uneven pad wear on this side it ended up like this, it has some grooves on the outer edge, and some on the inside of the rotor. Is it going to be fine? Should I get new rotors? I really hate to do that since the rest are all fine.

If it were my car I'd replace them and take it as a lesson learned: don't wait until it's too late to replace worn-out brake pads. :( If you don't, you will unevenly wear your new pads, causing them to wear out even faster.

well I didn't wait too long to replace the pads, all of them have more than enough pad left besides this one on the passenger side :( And I just noticed that like two days ago because of the noise it was making, the rest are just fine, but because of that one pad, now this rotor is eff'd up. And they're the slotted rotors so I would be best off changing them all, or at least both fronts.

I'd replace the pads (obviously), both front rotors (Always replace brakes in pairs), and check that that caliper isn't sticking. Clean/lube the caliper slides, etc.

Yeah I already planned on cleaning and lubing the slides and everything cause I'm pretty sure they are what caused this problem in the first place. Pads I already got, and I'm going to miss my slotted rotors :(

And I know they should be done in pairs, thats why I really didn't want to do it lol, cause my driver side one is still flawless :(

I've driven on a temporary basis with not only different rotors, but also different friction materials, lol. You aren't supposed to do that, no, but I didn't really have any problems under normal braking. Of course you never know when you're going to have to be doing more than just normal braking, depending on whatever happens to happen on the road that day.

If only the pads (or even just one pad) on that side was heavily worn, it could have been caused by a number of things. Are you sure the caliper was sticking? If it wasn't the problem, the rotor was probably warped or you have a problem with the hub on that side (e.g. excessive run out).

Also, why didn't you just buy a single replacement slotted rotor if the other one is in good shape? You don't have to replace rotors in pairs really, not even pads. You just have to make sure you have pretty much the same braking equipment on both sides--same rotor type, same pad material. You don't have to replace the other set of pads if it's the same pads but it's advisable since it makes brake changes easier that way (so you don't end up with one pair of pads new in the box for no reason, lol).

I need brakes now, within the day, and nowhere carry's slotted's for the GA's in their stock. And RSM where I got them in the first place doesn't exist anymore, and still I need them today :( I'm almost positive the caliper sticking was the problem as the hardware on that side is all corroded up and nothing is lubed very well.

Why not have both front rotors turned. It looks like you have enough stock left to turn them once.

You could try, but few places will turn slotted/drilled rotors.

Plus once they are turned you run the risk of warping them. Actually you have a better chance once they are turned of warping them, especially if you are hard on your brakes on a regular basis.

Alright, another question. So now one of the bleeders broke off. So that caliper is pretty much screwed. Should I replace both calipers or is it fine to just replace the one? I'm guessing its fine to just do the one. And also any tips on breaking the bleeders loose?

I think it would be fine to only replace one caliper, they aren't something that really wears unevenly. :) As for the bleeder screws, try using a line wrench or closed-end wrench that goes all the way around the head. Use penetrating fluid if you have to. PB Blaster works particularly well. :)

... if you have a torch, heat up the bleeder screw SLIGHTLY and then try and "Easy Out" as you can probably get the screw out and reuse the calliper :)

I was thinking about trying that before buying a full new caliper. Would definitely save some cash heh.

Thanks for all the help guys :)

As far as the bleeder screws go is it possible to buy new ones? Everywhere I look they say "with drum brakes".
