So I have a Pioneer head unit I took out of my Mustang while I rebuild it. I wanted to put it in my GA... an '02 SE1. So I go to Best Buy, I pick up one of the dash kits, it was a GM 88+, I checked the back... well it didnt work for an '02. So I asked for help. Well they ended up getting the right one from the back. I then said I needed a wiring adapter too. The guy picked one up and gave it to me. I asked him twice if it would fit, he assured me. Dude even told me that I needed a attena adaptor for newer GMs. So I go home, take the dash apart, take out the factory and I sat it aside. I then hooked the harness up to the Pioneer. I go to hook it up... DOESNT fit! I am pissed now, the guy told me it would fit. I go back to Best Buy... the same guy is there. I tell him it didnt work. Now let me tell you what he looks like to set the scene. Dude is about 6'4" and weights maybe 165 wet, shaggy hair, tall and linky. His 10' arm raises up and smacks himself on the forehead and in a dopey tone says, "Maaaan, I'm sorry. I have been up since 6am. You need a special adaptor, it costs $120". I about smacked him and fainted. I had everything I needed, if I knew it was $120 I may have waited. Come to find out, basically the whole car runs through the radio, airbags, door chimes and some other stuff. I guess it is called CatBus 2?
Has anyone else ran into this problem? Is there anyway around it? Or do you know where I can find more info about this?
What was GM thinking? Integrating

i got mine from crutchfield for 80, its annoying as shit cus that damn chimer is louddddddd as shit. i had to duct tape the shit out of it to muffle the sound. i think theres a way around it though, but i dont like spilicing 50 wires.

You dont need the adapter but its the only way to plug and play. You will lose all the chimes though but some people dont mind it.

use a saturn harness, same price as the normal GM one, and then youll need an ignition wire, run it from your fuse box by the drivers door.

i don't know about 02 but for 01 i just went to circuit city and got one. None of the chimes or anything that best buy tried to sell me. cost about 30 bucks i think.

i think the harness also allows the stereo to remain on once the car is turned off,and then turns off once the drivers side door is opened

The guy also told me that it would disable the airbag system and possible trip a dash light, is that true?

The Airbag is not dependent on the stock HU.

the only thing the databus adaptor gives you is chymes and the 10min delay. has nothing to do with anything else. if you can live without chymes and a 10min delay when the car is off. then you don't need to spend that kind of money. if you like that stuff then you do need to spend that much money. you should be able to get it a bit cheaper then 120 bucks though. I got mine for 100CND.

yea with the saturn harness all you loose is the chimes and stay on delay. most people i know dont even like the chimes. the best buy people tend to make assumptions on the GA because on other cars the airbags are tied into the stereo.

I told the dude at c city I had a cheap harrness, he starts to freak and tell me that my ABS, and Air bags are disable. I looked at him like he was crazy and walk away.

In addition to not actually knowing GM setups... They're also told to say that because they want to scare people into buying stuff they don't need.

Ok, let me get this right. I can either go to Best Buy, pay 120, or C. City for 80, or get a Saturn harness for 15-20 and run and extra wire for power and not have chimes?

That is correct. I have the "non chime module" harness part number listed in the dash kit/harness thread I started.

I got the Shosce(sp?) harness from walmart if I remember correctly it was $40 and keeps the chimes and they are not loud either. I can't even hear them most of the time. I didn't have to run any wires and everything works fine.

That is what I have too and I love it. Chimes annoyed me...
