Does anyone have a CONCRETE answer as to whether or not I need a passport just to travel through Canada? I'm getting constantly conflicting answers...

... no, you don't need one ... a birth certificate or a drivers license is all you need as far as I know ... going TO the States, that is all I ever use being I don;t have a Passport ... I am going to get one though as the day is coming when you will have to :) ... if you want to know for sure Trish, call customs or better yet, call the border people :)

According to a news report put out last week, President Bush put a hold on the manditory need for a passport for AT LEAST another 6 months. Having said that you WILL need your birth certificate AND valid drivers license

The canadians could give a shit... its getting BACK into the US that has sometimes been an issue

Trish, don't do it.

It's a hassle at both borders. You could get detained and searched if they feel like it. Everything is more expensive in Canada. Take the southern route below Lake Erie, stop at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, take a side trip to see the Falls (north of Buffalo) but stay on the US side.

Why do you want to go that way?

Not really a hassle, especially if they know you're just passing through ... but, if they do suspect something wrong or if you're overly nervous, they can "take a closer look" ... best thing is to simply be honest and polite, answering EXACTLY what you're asked :) ... in terms of prices, gasoline might be a little more expensive but not a whole bunch if you are saving mileage by going through Canada at the same time ... Canada loves Americans

Well, I'm picking up Nikki in MI and if she were any more north she'd be in Canada.. It just seems silly to go all the way back down MI and go around that way, it's like doubling back...

Currently a passport is required for air and sea entry by people coming from Canada into the U.S. The next stage, which has been delayed again and again, is for passport requirements for land crossings, now scheduled to come into effect in the summer of 2008.

For the passport issue...No you do not need one to cross the US border. However, you should have one. Specially the new passport. It will make you cross the border easier...
When crossing the border; as said before, be polite, answer exactly what's asked, keep answers short and accurate. Do not hide anything, remove your sunglasses, unless you wanna spend lots of time waiting there, and thourough search.
If you are going to bring pills, ensure that they are in there original containers and labelled. A simple, loose, "Tylenol" in the glove box compartment can cause great delays. Ensure that your trunk is well packed and baggaged easily available, and labelled to your name or your passenger's name. Customs may ask you to "power-on" any electronic devices.
If you are bringing a electronic equipment (digital camera, laptop) you may want to consider registring it at Canada's customers before you cross back.
Avoid wearing safety shoes with steel toe protection...It raises the level of anxiety with some custom officers. Take my word it, or try the experience...
As anybody else has other comments on this?

If you are planning on seeing Niagra Falls, get there before during the day or early evening. They reduce the flow during the night.
