Not too much you can do without paying anything. You can try porting and polishing available stuff, but you'd have to be somewhat careful with that.

Don't mod if ya can't afford it. :D

He can just do small things like upgrading ignition or get an exhaust. If he doesn't get much for bills and has a part time job it should be easy enough to be able to afford small stuff.

the first performacne mod ud want to get is a COLD AIR INTAKE... you can probably find one for less then $100... start there.

One thing you can do is to make sure that you are getting all the stock horsepower that is listed.

Make sure the spark plugs are fresh, connections to the coils clean, good vacuum tubing, intake and throttle body clean and clear, fresh fuel filter, etc.

Pish do what I did, get her REALLY angry so she "breaks" up for about 2 weeks then make your purchase! She will come back=p It's what I had to do when I bought my 04 Grand Am 6/24/07

CAI is second. On a Quad 4, exhaust should be first mod... it is the most restrictive.

Agreed. Otherwise, speed costs money.

Wires? The 2.3 doesn't have any. Unless the ignition system is worn, don't mod it. It is already quite strong on the 2.3.

And um... when you're 17 any money spent on girlfriends is essentially the same as flushing the money. Do as you please, but I wouldn't buy them shit aside from taking them out.

you can always try lightening the car up a bit. doesnt cost a penny for removing unneccesary items and a lighter car will improve in all performance aspects: acceleration, handling, cornering, braking.

I would have mentioned weight, but it takes a significant about of weight reduction to make a noticeable difference. He may want carpet and seats for all those g/f's.

Pulling the spare tire out of the car helps take about 25-45 lbs off.

Take your tape deck out if you have one, floor matts any extra junk in glove conpartment, never fill the tank all the way up, spare tire jack and stuff, my 6 by 9's were blown out so i ripped those out since I have subs, hack off the resonater, anything else?

And any subs weigh more than everything you just removed. You're not going to see a significant difference pulling out little things like that.

I take my subs out if I go to the "track" I know its all little things but it all adds up, and who really needs any of that

But the little things combined still make no significant difference. Read this:
http://www.daleholley.com/nissan.htm

Silly article/project yes, but look at the numbers... look at how much weight they had to remove/cut/sawzall just to drop a fraction of a second.
