I saw a picture of a 5th gen without the ribs, and it looked very nice. I want to do it to my 4th gen, but I have no idea how it would look.
Does anyone have a pic of a 4th gen with no ribs? =)

This is a pre 1996, but still, its close enough. You do have to weld or otherwise close/cover the holes in the front on the door area. The larger pics are about halfway down.

not just welding.......You have to cut off these little metal "nipples" that the plastic brakets are held in place with that hold the door molding on. Ive had mine off a few times.
Might as well leave them on unless you plan on having the car repainted, just not worth the look of removing the molding and using just the lines in the door.

yup, unless you were going to be shaving the car smooth(door handles,locks,antenna,etc....) and painting the car custom,I wouldn't bother
