VIN on engine

Hi,
Is there a way to find the VIN on the motor and if so where would it be located? I was offered a low mileage motor that is out of a salvaged car and I would like to see if I could carfax it.

... not sure about a serial number, but there is definitely a date code ... on the right hand side of the head there will be a 99, etc as referring to the year the engine was made

Thanks for the info but I need the VIN to do a carfax report on it. I figure it should show a salvage at said mileage or at least no reports or records past it.

Yeah I know it's not fool proof.

I was able to find it. FYI It's right below and to the right of the starter. There will be a flat machined surface on the edge of the block facing the radiator right where it hooks up to the transmission.
