He is probably using a Point and shoot. Between the limitation of AF only, as well the fact that he probably doesn't have a tripod with him for slow shutter timing (or an IS lens), it makes it hard for night shots.

Even my EOS 400D has issues with the AF in low light, I usually have to set it to MF.

i don't have a great camera, its a fujifilm pinepix a205 its a old one, i got it off of my aunt. the camera works alright in the day time, night time shots are almost impossible with this camera the first pic i took about 15 before it looked decent. i will try again tonight with my brothers sony camera.
