i picked up the pacesetter header. Does it need a header gasket to go on or is it not use a header gasket on the grand am's?

DO NOT USE THE PACESETTER HEADER GASKET supplied-poor quality! Go to the dealer (Pontiac, Chevrolet, etc.) and pick-up- GM#(p.n.) 12589453/gasket exhaust manifold ( cost around $10.00).This exhaust manifold gasket has been upgraded from previous design. This exh. mani. gasket is for 2.2 engine. Also best to replace all exhaust mani. nuts w/ new locking ones and if you want I used "COOL IT. Thermo Inc" header wrap to keep eng. bay cooler-excellent product!

Almost forgot to add...with the 2.2 eng. this, by taking off the exhaust manifold is a great time to replace your thermostat...since that's what you have to do (taking off the exh. manifold) to get at the thermostat! Also at this time I replaced the two heater hoses-dealer bought hoses also-pre-bent hoses! Don't waste your time trying to fit straight heater hoses(in a bag that you cut to size) from auto store-tried it and it didn't work because the hoses crimped trying to form that tight bend from heater core nipples to water outlet assembly!

Your welcome, icedevil!! Glad to help... here's a big help with the rest of the exhaust system...go to "modifications>powertrain performance modifications" and go to page 13 (as of 9 July 07), and find "Mufflers and Exhaust Manufacturers-Xidion(thread writer)". You'll find ALOT info. on the rest of upgrading your exhaust system!

Quick question, I'm also getting a pacesetter header (for the 2.4L engine), would I need to go get a new gasket, too? If so, same p/n? Let me know.

Thanks in advance,

-Nate

You can use the same one, but its just best to go and get one from the dealer. They say the new ones are better. Its only like $10-12. I called the dealer and asked them cause i might change the pacesetter header gasket. I put the gaskets that came with the header. I've had them on for about a month.

I know I can use the same one, but I just want the better quality. If I have to spend $10 now in order to save myself going to the shop for an exhaust leak, then so be it. :)
