mmk.
so.
i blew my 2.4 up(im not going through the story again, search it.)
my new 2.2 will have a cobalt ss manual tranny.
heh the 2.4 was auto.

could someone get my a parts list and stuff i'd need to do the conversion?

maybe a price estimate?

Not many people at all have done this conversion so a parts list is not something many people have. I'd imagine it could get quite pricy (into the thousands), plus you'll have to do a lot of custom modification. I'd search around on other forums and see how many other people have done a conversion from auto to manual (even if they havn't necessarily done it in a GA). That should at least give you an idea.

O and btw...under your name it says "Engine: 2.4L V4 (inline)"....if it's an inline engine it would be an I4 not a V4...just thought I would point that out.

i know, thats why it says inline after haha.

into the k's? dang how so.
im not worried about the custom stuff.
and i already have the tranny.

well if you already have the tranny I suppose the main chunk of the cost is done...

the axles, shifter, shift linkage, clutch fluid resivor, ect. can be transfered from another manual 2.4L Grand Am...unless you already have those handy or if the tranny you have has parts that can match up w/ the GA...I'm unsure if the tranny you have now will bolt up to your engine right though...also DHP or HPTuners along with proper wiring, should be able to make enough changes to keep the electronics from being unhappy.

wait wait.
the cobalt ss tranny is made for an ecotec.
so that should line up fine.

and i was told by a mechanic that since GAs can handle an ecotec, they can handle any tranny for them. of course, ill have to cut holes for the clutch pedal, and shifter and such.

ah, I was unaware of that. Not many people have done this swap so best of luck to ya, most people would just stick w/ the auto. I'm also far from an expert on this topic, so I would definately get a second opinion. Be sure to take pics of the process!

i def will.
dude a GA with a cobalt ss tranny?
all thats its missing is the supercharger.
this thing is still going to be sick.

i went with the cobalt ss becuase my mech said the ss has the highest gear ratio then any other tranny for the ecotec.

Some GAs come with Ecotecs and 5 speeds...I think this is all you'll need

Axles from 5-speed GA
Clutch, clutch master cylinder, lines, clutch pedal
tranny mounts from 5-sp GA
Shifter and linkage from 5-sp
cruise control box, and tranny wiring harness....or some splicing work

a 5-sp cruise control box is needed. you know how it de-activates when you hit the brakes? well the 5-sp also has a safety switch to do the same when the clutch is pushed in also..theres an extra plug on the box itself, just for that

Don't need the cruise box, you can just wire the 2 switches together, that's what I did.
And BTW, your easiest route is to go with the 2.4L 2000, 2001 and the Getreg. Easy factory flash and no extra wiring.
Still a PITA but plug and play is nice. Good luck, I'm sure you will get the eco and tranny to work anyway.

[/B] Well, since there's no such thing as a V4 for the grand am (the V basically means that the cylinders are in a "V" shape in the engine), you might want to change the tag so you won't get flamed. i've gotten flammed before using both so i just put both up so no one can say anything ha.

would my current wiring harness work from my 200 2.4l?

once again, GAOC is helping me out more and more :D

im heading to a junkyard later today.
is everyone for sure thats what all i'll need?:
Axles from 5-speed GA
Clutch, clutch master cylinder, lines, clutch pedal
tranny mounts from 5-sp GA
Shifter and linkage from 5-sp

and i dont need the cruise control box?
my GA already has cruise control but im sure with a 5 spd its differ then auto. but i can do without that for now.

I think your mechanic is in over his head. For several reasons, changing from one engine series to another is too difficult.

x2. Another 2.4 and Getrag would be the way to go.

Using both? Why? So you are always wrong no matter what? It is an I4.

Nope. Nor will your existing PCM.

You need more info if you want to pull this off. Hope your mech friend can help you.
The PCM is the computer that controls the electronics of the motor. Probably the hardest thing to get right when doing a different engine series swap. You will either need to rewire your harness or stick to 2000 or 2001 stuff. Or go with HP tuners.

this should be fairly easy. heres my plan:
buy a 2.4, put it back in my GA to get it running.
save up a little.
but a 03+ manual GA

swap the parts then put the 2.4 in the new GA and sell that.

then all my parts i need are right there
