Can anyone help me out with a quick how-to on removing the instrument cluster in a 1997 grand am gt? Is this an easy thing to do? I need to replace my fiance's cluster.

-thanks

You would do well to get a Haynes manual for the car, about $20 at the AutoZone/Checker/etc.

It explains the following for '92-'98 vehicles, and has seven semi-legible diagrams/photos for the '85-'91 models (which were similar):
"1. Disable SIR system (airbags).
2. Disconnect battery negative terminal.
3. Remove Instrument Panel cover as follows
a. Remove driverside air deflectors by pulling rearward gently.
b. Carefully pry upward with a rocking motion alternately on the left and right retaining clips, then remove the cover.
4. Remove the left instrument panel trim plate as follows:
a. Remove the left sound insulator and the steering column filler.
b. Remove the fuse cover.
c. Unfasten the two retaining screws, then remove the plate by pulling to disengage the clips.
5. Unfasten the cluster retaining screws.
6. Loosen the right cluster trim plate retaining screws. Pull the trim panel back far enough to remove the cluster.
7. If applicable, detach the electrical connector(s), then remove the cluster completely from the vehicle. Some manuvering is required to extract the cluster.
8. Installation is the reverse."

this is verbatim Chilton's, and I accept no responsibility for its accuracy.
Apparently, neither does Chilton's :banghead: :D :D

Chilton's was absorbed by Haynes, and now only Haynes are available.

Hope this helps,
-Rick

Thanks alot. I actually have the manual, but it's never been much of a help for me on cosmetic stuff, since most of the pictures are of the old style. Now that you mention that it's in there, I'll give it a look. Sorry if I wasted your time by making you type it all out, but again I really appreciate the help.
