i read up a little and couldn't find out if resonators are restrictive or not. i want to get a performance exhaust but i want it to be not loud. if i get a 2.5" exhaust, and i get a 2.5" in/out resonator, will the setup be just as free flowing as a straight up 2.5" exhaust without resonator?

thanx in adv.

screw the resonator.when i had mine removed i was able to tell a difference, but with a flow. 80 on the car already, it wasnt that much more noticable.

A resnator can be restrictive or not. Depends on their purpose on that particular vehicle. Some are actually a pre-muffler but some are just straight through design which keeps the raspy sounds down. I didn't notice any power difference on mine but notice the raspy sound was there and hate it. Im getting an inline MagnaFlow muffler to act as one.

so you're saying it's not restrictive as long as its the same in/out diameter as the rest of the exhaust. if it keeps the raspyness down then id rather have it. or like you're saying, get a muffler. but which costs less? is the question.

On the Grand Am's I do believe the resonators are pretty much a straight through design. A lot of people take theirs off because when they get new piping they don't bother having the exhaust shop weld it back on the new pipping.

Cost,I dunno, should be free if you keep your stock one with new exhaust setup.

Basically a resonator and muffler are different in the sense of duty..Muffler,muffles the sound. The resonator keeps any resonance from happening(or other words, raspy sound).

Glass packs act as both.

It all depends what route you want to go with sound and performance. If you want a loud exhaust sound then take it off if you want a nice exhaust tone thats not going to get annoying, keep it on..... It all depends on the setup as well. You get a muffler that has chambers in it,you won't need a resonator because the muffler is going to keep any raspy sound from being heard.

i noticed at high end i had more power without it...

i guess ill go the muffler route. thanks for the info

When you remove the resontator does it fail some state inspections? And when you remove the resonator does it put more stress on your transmission?

cant say anything about inspections.. dont have those here... i dont think it adds any stress to anything, if anyything is should make it easier on the car cause its using less power to push out the exhaust.

lucky^^^^^^^^here in Texas we need yearly inspections. No cat=for sure failed inspection.

on my car, I tried it with both with and without the res and found that the sound was much better with it on and the power seemed the exact same. All it is, is a place where the gases can expand a bit.
