... figured, what the hell ;)
Anyway, quick question ... is the GAOC going to have a Calendar again this year? If so, only the single Grand Am version or runner-up and Non-GA versions as well as in previous years?
Finally, if we do have a calendar or calendar depending on what the majority of people want, how are will going to do the voting this year? Personally, I would simply like to have everyone just vote for ONE (not there own if they submit a picture) but people have complained when I did that previously. Give it some thought and post up your suggestions :)

Calenders are a fun part of The GAOC. It would be a shame to see it go. However. For some reason, I remember people complaining, or at least talking about the voting being rigged. By rigged, I mean that people were registering multiple accounts, in order to vote for themselves.
Could PM voting work? Or, possibly restrict a member from voting if they don't have enough posts?
Just throwing out an idea or two. Seems kinda juvenile to worry about cheaters. Buts it's bigger crime to see cars that deserve to be there get robbed by cheaters. And this is coming from a guy that wouldn't stand a chance of getting in the calender in the first place. In other words...I'm impartial.

If theres a cheating problem wouldn't it be possible to only allow members of more then 6 months the ability to vote, eliminating multiple new accounts, restrict voting to once per IP address, meaning that if members have accounts from last year or w/e they won't be able to double vote. Same with only active accounts being able to vote... I dunno if thats possible but that would probably help some.

Maybe this has been tried in the past and ppl didn't like it, but what about a "Best of Albany 07" type of calender? Have 1, 2 or 3 pictures per month. I know they would be smaller but you could fit more in per month.
Just an idea :idunno:

Single 12 months GA calander.
Vote for 11 months worth of cars, then for December have a collage of the #12-22 best cars. This will give 11 members the chance to get a spotlight, but it will also give 10 more the chance to have their pics in the calander. Overall 21 cars and 21 happy GA'ers.

Winner only calender, no non-GA and no runner up calendars.

If there's no runner up calendar, I think we need to make some guaranteed spots for representation of GA gens besides 99+.

Why get rid of the other 2 calendars? If you don't want 'em, don't buy 'em. Seems pretty simple to me. :)
I like the idea of the 3. Give equal opportunity to everyone. As well, I might suggest breaking it up into generations, so that each of the FWD generations are represented. Sound like a plan?
wiseojelly
07-20-2007, 09:09 AM
 I don't think I am fully awake... break it up into generations? Like how? Sorry... slow as usual
sunrunner_pei
07-20-2007, 09:10 AM
I should have elaborated. :)
What I mean, would be to reserve a few months for each generation. Every year the calendar is dominated by 1999-2005 models, it would be nice to see some 1985-1991, and 1992-1998 models as well. :)
wiseojelly
07-20-2007, 09:12 AM
So like make a poll for each generation maybe? And then take the top few of each one? I'll stop now before I hurt myself. But it makes more sense now! thanks, Shawn.
sunrunner_pei
07-20-2007, 09:17 AM
Something like that. Of course the details would have to be ironed out, but say reserve one month for a 3rd gen, and another month for a 4th gen in the winners calendar. :)

... only problem with that, that I can see, is that you might end up "making due" with a car picture simply because it fits into a model year ... anyway, lets the suggestions fly :) ... just as a reminder though, it has been our normal practise that #1 GA Calendar is 1 through 12 (cover selected by Calendar Staff) and #2 GA Calendar is 13 through 24 (cover to be 25 onward) and then finally, Non-GA Calendar is 1 through 12 only (cover selected by the Calendar Staff) ... in regards to an Albany Calendar, we could no problems but it would be REALLY HARD to select the pictures used from all that were taken :( ... comments in this regard would be nice to hear as well :)

I think a more effective solution would be to not permit any new member registrations AT ALL during the voting period.

Yes it is juvenile to worry about cheating, but it is juvenile to cheat as well. And sadly, we must take actions to prevent cheating. It is not fair to those that play by the rules for some person thinking they are slick and trying to pull a fast one.

And it is my opinion too, Dave. A very good suggestion in my book. If a person is all bent out of shape because they dod not make it, they can take 13 pics of their car and have a calendar made just for them. LOTS of places today will make a one-off calendar for a decent price.

Oh my gawd, Josh. I remember that drama all too well. If there is at least 50% of the BS from last year, I definitely will be prepared with a gallon of Maalox. Maybe a drum would be better... :shake:

I fully agree, Kel. I mean, you will invariably have to choose a crappy photo of say a 2nd gen GA over a excellent 4th gen just to fill the quota. If we do not have the amount of 1st-3rd gen pix of high quality, it is because A, people took a poor photo or B, there are very few early gen owners on this board.
Damn, I need to hit the Maalox already... :D

Ok. So what's to stop a cheater from registering ghost accounts before the voting period?
I still say that PM voting, accompanied by a minimum post count, is the only solution. Sure, there could be ways around my idea too. But it seems the most effective way to deal with cheaters.
And again. It's terrible that we are even talking about this. But...cheating does happen. To bad that a few bad apples had to spoil the bunch.

Agreed. Also. I was going to suggest six GT winners. And six SE winners. But...you would prolly end up running in to the same "making due" problem.

If you do that you might as well just do 4 se's, 4gts and 4 sct's... and i still think people from the previous year shouldnt be allowed to have an entry either... keep it fun for everyone else :) (kinda like gaotw rarely if ever has a repeat winner)

I don't see the need to disqualify people who've already been in the calendar... or to make make it 6 GT and 6 SE or 4 4 4.. It's about the picture right? So it should go to the 12, 24, 36 people with the best picture... Regardless of trim level or times in the calendar

I liked the idea of the 3. I'm not to keen on the idea of a Albany 07 calander, not to fair to the ppl that couldnt go.
As for the "cheaters", just make it so they have to have a certain number of posts to vote.

Very simple. We can even shut down registration at any time we choose.
You know, THIS is the reason I am NOT looking forward to this as a member of the mod staff. Consider this, Johnny. The fact you are SO concerned about cheaters is actually somewhat disheartening. I mean, the fact you are actually posting workarounds to try to circumvent our safeguards could lead one to question your true motives... I mean, you just gave any potential cheaters a way to get around this, my friend... Now as a moderator, I am beginning to have "concerns" about the integrity of the voting...and it has not even started!!!!! :magus:
All this worrying about how we try to do something nice for people and yet have everybody question everything we do is why I do not look forward to this. :(

Don, John's cool, he is just playing devil's advocate :) ... seriously, I know what John is getting at but believe me guys, if we cannot come up with a method of voting that makes the Calendar Staff happy, there won't be a calendar :( ... anyway, I am honestly thinking about this PM or emailing idea in terms of voting ... it would cause 'us' more work but it would also allow 'us' to confirm the validity of the accounts and checking for multiple registrations ... good ideas thus far ... keep them coming guys ... the vote total seems lop sided though

Thanks Kelly. I appreciate the proverbial rub. It means a lot.
On that note. I'm sure that Don misunderstood my intentions. And...I was waiting for somebody to ask why I was so concerned. Or... question my motives. In other words...His reply was expected, and more than understandable.
I should explain my reasoning... and concern.
First off... I was an admin at a fairly large forum for over four years. I know how cheaters can manipulate voting. That's why I offered my opinion.
Second. I had great fun trying to get in the calendar last year. I knew that I didn't stand a chance...but had a good time trying. And, a good time voting for all the great Grand Ams on this site.
If nothing else...I learned a bit about taking pictures of cars. I'm not an expert photographer, the likes of Don. But I do enjoy taking pictures.
Third. I had every intention to buy a GAOC calendar last year. But, after witnessing what I believed to be a juvenile attempt by some members, to make it in to the calendar....I couldn't buy one. Sorry. But that's how I roll. That's a shame, really. After all...I'd do almost anything to support the site.
Ps. I know some may be thinking that if I wanted to support the site, I would be more active. Well...I'll admit. I haven't been as active as I could have been over the last while. But... there is a reason for that. You see...My mom took sick with cancer. I was spending as much time as could with her. (glad I did)
Anyway. She passed on about a month ago. God rest her soul.
Back on topic. My intentions are nothing but pure. They always are.
And I continue to support the idea of pm voting with a minimum post count. Might be a bit more work. But I'm sure one of the mods would happily take on the responsibility.
~Thank you. John.

Visit as much as you can John, we'll always be here when you 'need' us :) ... sorry to hear about your Mom :(
On topic ... keep all the comments coming guys and girls ... I promise, everything will be considered and every attempt will be made to make voting as fair as possible ... one final thought, if I may, everyone MUST remember that the Calendar idea is and will always be, an act of unprofessionals for the fun of the members so it is expected for 'learning curves' to take place :)
Anyway, like I said, keep making comments as you see fit but I can at least say this ... there will be a calendar this year but it is just a manner of what versions; although going by the totals, it will be as per last year :)

I could see 3 months for one Generation and 3 for another and so forth Unless we don't get enough entry's or reasonable representation, then less months for that generation. Top 3 from each era kinda thing
Winners only, as well as a non GA calendar, seriously if you HAVE to have yoru car in a calendar, take 12 shots and make your own :)
also any drama or bitching about the calendars and voting i say automatically disqualifies you from being in the calendar :)
Remember people, this is for FUN only, and Kelly takes time out of his busy schedule to do this, so NO whining or BITCHING
