Is there a better route to remove hard water spots then going to a detail shop?

A fresh wash & dry should remove most spots, and a claybar should lift anything left behind.

All water contains mineral deposits of various kinds. If the water spots stay on the paint for to long they will *etch* into the clear coat. At that point the only way to remove them is to machine polish, in essence leveling the CC to the lowest level of the *etching*.
This is what i would do if working by hand:
wash
dry
claybar
cleaner wax (make sure to really work this hard into the surface)
pure wax

If the spots aren't too bad, use regular car wax. Give the car a good wax job. Try to use a quality wax and they should come out. Use it even on glass. Try a small area first and see what happens. I bet it works fine for you. I've done this several times before with pretty good success. I'd do that before trying all kinds of other stuff. Not long ago, the wife parked next to the automatic sprinkler system where she works. Her car had hard water spots all over the one side. I was pretty ticked off! I gave it a good waxing and the spots came out no problem.

A pure wax wont remove water spot etching though. The only thing a pure wax or sealant does is provides protection to the paint. It does not correct paint in anyway shape or form.
A *cleaner wax* is a whole nother story and provides a different function.
Waxing with a pure wax will however remove water spot mineral deposits that are on the surface of the paint that have not yet etched. The reason it removes them is becuase of the mechanical act of *rubbing* the paint with something. In reality the wax had nothing to do with it.
