View Full Version : My car lacks "balls"

now i know what you all might be thinking... this guy is judging power by the amount of rubber he cna burn off his tires. thats no the case at all... i have been watching videos of guys just hammering the gas and letting the smoke fly... decided id see what she had tonight... excellent conditions out and on fresh pavement... she would barely let out a squeal with the ETS off and in first gear... is this normal or should i be looking into this... just got it tuned up with plugs, wires etc.

My Trans Am won't even chirp the tires when I floor it from a stop. Unless I brake torque it or its really cold out will it spin. I consider it a good thing.
My G/A will barely chirp one of the front tires if I floor it from a stop. You have nothing to worry about. You have a big heavy engine sitting on top of your drive tires that makes its max torque at 4k rpms and max HP at 5200rpms. Its not going to roast the tires off the line.

^^:agree: Same thing with the Z28 I owned.

And you're right about the "balls" part. These cars weren't built for "balls to the wall" performance.

BTW, squealing tires = lost power to the road.

You should be able to squak your tires easily, when was the last time you had a full tune-up?

i agree with coupe. It takes no effort at all for me to spin my tires in any condition if i floor it. Based on the grand am's torque and the inertia of the car I would expect it to spin.

right.....i can spin mine easily as well... but i got the crappy RSAs which could be why too haha

Dont put it in 1st. Thats part of the reason. Put it in 3rd and take off the ETS. I have really good tires and I can still chirp them rather easy.

Maybe I'm missing the point....why exactly do you want to spin the tires?

Its fun

Its fun, as said... but in a normal race situation, absolutely useless (Spinning your tires on take off is not a good thing...)

Well after getting new tires I'm able to chirp out of normal drive and the lower gears are equally fun. I guess it does help that I had part of my transmission rebuilt, because I couldn't do it before. :P

Rand, you know of course I was being a smartass. My point here is that like stated before, wheelspin equals a loss of power to the pavement. Besides that, you cannot base the size of a cars "balls" on it's ability to lay down the rubber. Many other factors come into play. Mike, as long as the car gets a good tune-up and gets good gas mileage, I wouldn't worry too much about "squealing tires." Your neighbors will tell you the same. :)

What concerns me is that he should be able to easily and he cant. I can spin my drag radials easily and those are gumballs. IMO he needs a full tune up or............. learn to drive

My tires spin half way though first, but I launch at about 2.2k rpms... My car is bone stock (still waiting on CAI from doctorspeed) but as they said, mileage comes first! Getting 27 mpg half streets half freeway

Stupid newb question but how do you launch at 2.2? Is it 5 speed? I know I cant neutral drop it. Hold the brake?

look im not askign anyone to critizes my driving. i simple stated that my car does not peel off tires like everyone else claims there does. therefore i was asking for solutions... a week ago i added new ac delco platnium pros and taylor wires... car runs like a dream compared to what it used to... i also changed my air filter and my fuel filter... we can go from there

My car doesnt either. I mean is it because it's a four door

Cylinder head swap from newer 3.5 3500 engine found in the G6 and Impala, some others too....anyway, its a inexpensive mod considering the results...a few hundred bucks if you know where to get the parts at

its not about spinning the tires... i could care less... i just notice everyone else saying they can and i want to know if its a bad thing that i cant

I hold the brake yes....What grade of gas do you use? I use 91 octane and make sure your AC is turned off....

... no, it isn't a bad thing that you can't ... I didn't read the entire thread so I am not sure but what kind of tires do you have? ... pressure? ... turn the traction control off, does it spin then? ... does the car 'seem' like it pulls alright ... doesn't sputter or miss and still gets decent gas mileage? ... if yes, don't worry about it ... my car sometimes spins like crazy and then other time, it doesn't spin at all and my car works just fine :)

cranch

good gas mileage and it picks and and goes nicely

99GrandAMSE
07-31-2007, 08:08 PM
... then don't worry about it ;) ... like I said, sometimes my car doesn't spin at all and it still runs a 15.5 (sea level and temperature/humidity corrected to 15.0, I might add) in the 1/4 mile so it works fairly decent :)

Yeah, if I had a nickel for everytime people claim to have done something...:roll2:

Don't worry about it man, your car is fine.

Kelly is right, my car doesn't "spin" the tires that much I launch at 2300 and I am getting 9.77 in the 1/8th and at a quater mile track on a 97 degree Farrhenheit ady at 1250 elevation i ran a 15.7 I have CAI and stock 2 in exhaust tube with removed resonator and a cherry bomb muffler(cost me $30 USD for the exhaust). soo correcxted my time would have been 15.1 or something close to it.

I hear people complain about this all the time however our GA would spin both tires pretty easily.

sure its easy to get them to break lose but people claim to BURN there tires off... i just cant see it

Yeah, I'd love to see a GA burn the tires off just by flooring it off the line. :bsmeter:

I can't see it. My car still has the factory tires at 58k miles and they are sitting at ~1/3 tread left....and like I said in my first reply they will barely chirp.

Do you guys launch or just punch it off the line? Try holding brakes, reving it up to 2k or so then dumping the brakes and punching it..... back to main topic... if your car is lacking balls go to pepboys and buy some, i saw a truck with a pair hanging off the back (even though they were blue!!)

In it's current state, turn the car to "On", put it in Neutral, get out and push.

Can you point out or link a thread where someone has said that?
I think your over exagerating.

You should be able to do this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dpgdoZNhZew

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MF-TGl3z3rQ

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nI8xF-wraOs

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWHNaP2KsvY

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Quzv_DfGmM

How your driving it DOES matter no matter what you may think. Its a starting point just like the car itself. If you dont know how to launch then of course you wont smoke your tires.

Mine will spin both tire off the line just by punching it but haven't been able to get it to do that ^.

I can chirp my 18's and my stock 14's. Ive NEVER been able to do a burn out though:(

Maybe its the automatic thats killing me.

Edit: I do remeber doing a decent burnout but it wasn't on dry pavement,it was raining and on a slight incline. At my old JVS school, A Fireo would ALWAYS do some kind of burn out in front of me,kind of pissed me off sometimes, well I returned the favor one day. It was raining and I got in line before him,so I put the car in 3rd and let the tires rip. By the time I stopped and left I couldn't see him anymore, lol. A month later I bought new tires, lol

so what would be the walk through on how to burn out like that on a grand am, a step by step would be a good solution to this thread. my only tricks are 180's and shit like that with the ebrake, idk how to burn out at all besides pushing the gas really fast

I'm not sure how well a GA will brake torque...i've never really tried in my GA....just no point

You could either do a brake torque....press the brake down hard enough that when you give it some gas the car will not move, then slowly let off the brake a little until the car starts slowly moving and spinning the tires.

Or you can pull up the ebrake and floor it since the ebrake only locks the rear tires.

*please do this in an open parking lot*

Yep just slam up the e-brake and punch it!!

I didn't read the entire thread either but depending on the weather I could either spin the wheels off of mine or it wouldn't spin at all.

My problem was that on the road I couldn't break the tires loose but on the track I would.

It actually took me a while before I could launch a FWD/Auto at the track.
