I have alloy wheels. Am I supposed to switch to another type of wheel for the winter?

Alloy is fine, chrome rims can sometimes lose there shine and crack do to salt.

Alloy rims can get bad from road salt too, just make sure to bring them into a tire shop if you start mysteriously losing a few PSI a week (road salt eats into the valve stem area, and you start leaking air). The main reason for not driving with expensive/chrome wheels in the winter isn't as much the salt attacking them, it's because if you hit ice and run into a curb, you're rim is either bent or scratched up.
If the alloy rims you have are the stock wheels, you should be fine in winter.

you'll be fine with what you got.
