Well i thought i would post to see what ya'll had to say.

A few weeks ago i noticed an odd noise on the drive home from work, never noticed it before. When i have the accelerator more than 3/4 of the way pushed down, and i am getting around 2000 rpms, there is a low rumbling/ roaring sound accompanied by small vibrations on the pedal. It will do it in every gear (5 speed).

Say i am in 4th going 35, i get around 1800 rpms. Well i press the gas to the floor it makes noise, i let up and the noise stops, press down makes noise.....It is almost like a farting sound...

I have no dummy lights, no loss of power or anything.

Also the car is not bogging, i always drive like this and never noticed the noise when i bought it...

I took it to have my free oil change at the dealer, and he took me for a ride, and drove like a manic. He told me i shift too early but, i blew it off. He told me i should shift between 3500-4000 rpms :wtf: i usually do it between 2500-3000rpms. So i go to 2nd around 15, 3rd at 25, 4th at 35, and 5th between 40-45. That is what my book says to do...

Any suggestions are appreciated, thanks!!! Gary

you can only hear the noise at low rpms, it goes away when it revs, or the noise f the engine just masks the sound.

like i said it had never made the noise up until a few vweeks ago, so it doubt i am the problem.

Your shift points seem fine, you don't need to rev to 4000 RPMs each time you accelerate.

I recall getting into my Monte and analyzing every sound to DEATH cause of my issues with the GA thinking everything was detrimental...you may be looking at this too much on an 07. Do you have a warrenty? If so don't worry!

My ex had an Eclipse that would make this odd farting like sound when pushing the gas at a stop sign...nothing ever happened because of it and the car is still around 2 years later.

Flooring the car at 1800 RPM in 4th gear is going to cause bogging. The 1.8L VVTi engines like to rev. If you want to gain speed on the highway, downshift and run at 3000 RPM+. Flooring it when under load at low RPM is doing nothing but waste gas, these aren't powerful motors down low. When you get to the speed you want, then shift into a higher gear for fuel economy.

Didnt you guys buy a vibe or a matrix? I cant remember...

Anywho, i do see your point, but like i said it had never had the noise before... Could it maybe have something to do with the Drive by Wire system???

I just took a small highway trip recently and gas mileage is still the same as always, 360 miles and still a hair under 1/4 of a tank...

Im talking around town anyways, when i go onto the highway, i usually shift into 2nd at 5000 rpms same for 3rd, then i keep my foot to the floor till i get to around 80, then shift to 5th.

I dislike 4th and 5th gear though, the first 3 gears are great, but from 3rd to 4th there is a big drop, then from 4th to 5th there is not much of a drop, only about 400 rpms...

The mechanic told me it is the same tranny as the one used in the Celica, except they added a 6th gear to the Celica's. I wish i had that 6th gear, on the highway at 75, in 5th, i pulling exactly 3000 rpms...

Again thanks for all of the input, and shawn it was a Vibe wasnt it?? Im racking my brain wayy back...

i will say this on the night i first noticed the noise i was showing off to some coworkers...

got off of work around 10, got in the (cold engined car) revved her up to maybe 3000 and did i nice long clutch rideing burnout... when i finally got the clutch all the way out i planted my foot in the carpet and she conbtinued to spin until she got traction around 30 mph.... then i drove home as usual with my early shifts, and i noticed the noise...

when ever i shift i usually have my foot close to the floor, so i shift then floor it around 2000 rpms until i gain enough speed then shift again and set the cruise at the limit of 35 or 45...

Yeah, we have an '06 Vibe, which has the same drivetrain (and platform) as your Corolla. Ours will make lots of lovely noise if you floor it at low RPM in a tall gear with a load on the engine. That's just what underpowered/small engines do in those circumstances. An auto transmission would downshift for you.

Why are you afraid to rev your engine? If you're that hard on the go pedal, you need to rev the engine out to make any useful power. These engines are designed to be dogs (for fuel economy) until ~4000 RPM, then they get into the valve timing and start to make a decent amount of power. Flooring it and short-shifting at low RPM is only making the engine work much harder than it needs to.

No, you don't need to rev high all the time. But if you're going to get that deep into the throttle you need to wind it out a bit. What you're doing makes no sense.

i always just assumed i would get better gas milage doing it that way...

it is usually only when i drive with my parents i drive like that... im more spirited when im alone...

She is a fun car and yeah makes good power in the upper rpm band...I just try and follow the suggested shift points like i said before... 15,25,35,45 for 2,3,4,5 respectively...

when im un a hurry or am racing  those shift points get thrown out of the window.

so u guys have the stick, what are your thought on the tranny? I know the Vibe/Matrix are a tad slower because of the weight. Did u guys get the AWD for the snow, then it really takes a toll on MPG and accel...

do you know when the VVT takes over, because i notice with your foot to the floor there is a change in engine pitch and sound around 3200 rpms...

The speed/RPM you shift at should relate to how much throttle you're using... full throttle = high RPM shifts; part throttle = low RPM shifts. If you want to save fuel (and your engine), don't be so hard on the go pedal. ;)
