I'm not overly big on the exterior appearance of my car. The paint is in good shape aside from some scratches and dings here and there, and I'd be happy just to keep the clearcoat from peeling and keep it from rusting or something.

I'm unlikely to wax the care more than 2 times a year.

With that in mind, I have a bottle of Finish 2001 and a tub of standard Turtle Wax paste. Which of these should I be using to wax the car? Is there something else out there that's not very expensive that would be significantly better in terms of long-lasting protection?

Here is the problem.
If you do not keep the paint clean (i do not mean just washed), it will degrade and eventually cause clear coat failure. You really really need to claybar, deep clean the paint and then wax/seal it. After that just wax it once a year with a cleaner wax and clay every spring.

Well, that was the plan as soon as I found a new hood. I have the claybar kit and everything.

Is one of these waxes OK for once or twice a year, or should I really go pick up something else?

2001 is basicly a cleaner wax and the TW is not bad stuff.

If you clay, 2001 and then TW you would be fine doing that once a year and it would keep your car lookin good.

You really should think about waxing every 3 months. After awhile you get good at it and it wont take you more than 30 minutes to do.
