For a couple of months now, my car has progressively been "shuddering" when it idles. The RPM's drop slightly then go higher as though it's fighting to keep from stalling. I was thinking it may be the fuel filter.. any other ideas?

Intake? Mine did that for a while and it was this itty bitty hose that goes behind the motor and puts air somewhere. It was sliding back and forth in its hole, so the car would get more air if it torqued the hose a certain way, then lose the car if it torqued it the other way. Try wiggling intake stuff around under the hood and see if you can get it to idle differently. If so, whatever you wiggled should be replaced.

its probably time to change the fuel filter and run some injector cleaner thru the system that would help alot.

My guess is you have a vacume leak or a iac valve problem.
If your car is still under warranty take it in. If not look for a vacume leak ,if one can not be found try cleaning your iac valve.

Thank you for the suggestions, and I am not familiar with the IAC valve.. what does it do and where is it located?

Thanks!
Nicole

i have a smiliar issue...my car idles normal just like it used to before i got the heads ported/polished along with the upper and lower manifolds...but it certainly does "shudder" or shake a little bit when sitting at a standstill. ill check over the hoses for any leaks. thanks.

it could also be a bad MAF sensor. Have that checked out too.

Here is a pic of the valve,it is located in the throttlebody the IAC is #2.
Its purpose is to control the amount of air entering the engine at idle. If your car is hunting for it's idle chances are the valve is dirty and can not meter the air entering the engine or you have a vac leak that is beyond the range of control for the valve.
I hope this helps.
