I have a 2000 GA SE that just clicked over to 82,000 miles. Can anybody beat that? I am on my third set of front rotors, and my second set of tires. Everything else is original. Everything!!!

Mine's on 82,195. 1997 SE, same engine as yours.

The only major work I've had to have done was the alternator and water pump (that one hurt.). 2nd set of tires for me also. ;)

Because of the short distances I drive it, it probably won't have over 85,000 before 2004 though so I'm sure you'll hit 100,000 long before I do.

I just hit 130,000 0n my 99 2.4 I know wow!! but I love to drive .I have not had one problem as far as the motor goes. The only major problem was brakes and that was when I first bought the car they are under a life time warranty now.But who hasen't had problems with gm's breaks?

my high mileage isn't on a grand am, but i had 215,792 on my truck as of 15 minutes ago. that's on the factory engine and transmission. i've had to replace the usual stuff like altenator and water pump and stuff that's determined to go out. It's a 1991 Chevy Silverado and I drive it everyday. Plus she'll still keep up with a V8 Camaro

Yeah I have a 99 2.4 and the engine and tranny both went on the same day at 50k! Very crazy.
Needless to say I put new in her.

Runnin' 137k on my 99 SE with 2.4 in it.

List of replaced items:
Plugs / Caps
Belt (130k on factory belt!)
Tires
Rotors
Brakes (many)
Right Wheel hub
Ignition assembly
Fuel Pressure Regulator

Unfortunatley though after two trips from Kansas to Nevada its developed some knocking in the engine. I suspect some of the noise may be coming from the belt tensioner but its leaking huge amounts of oil so I'm thinking its something worse. Any ideas?

Front or rear main seal, oil pan seal, oil filter or drain plug loose, or (hopefully not) a crack in the block.

oh yea, 82000 on my 2000. Brakes twice, plugs, and a new tranny.

i think i have you all beat! 97 GA se 2.4L 201,000 and still runs like a champ! it burns about a quart every 3,000mi when its cold out. other than that this thing seems bullit proof after what ive put it through. i think gm did well with these cars. my only problem is i desparately need shocks, struts, and springs. it handles like a tugboat. anyways good luck beating those numbers!

Replaced tires, air intake, and after my accidental meeting with a phone pole in the middle of a snowy night last December, I replaced the right headlamp assembly, serpentine belt, and radiator. It's missing the compressor and condenser for the a/c, and the right fender is a mess  Saving a few paychecks to redo the exhaust. I don't care too much how it looks, just as long as it outruns my best friend's Sebring (ew)

148000 on a 96. In the process of trying to get to the thermostat, think and hope that's the reason it's overheating. Replaced the water pump. Alternator 3 or 4 times along with the belt. It's leaking oil from the timing chain cover. Time for a newer GA:) but I'm looking for one with this same engine, 00 or 01

I've got 169,000 on my 1998 Grand Am SE 2.4L.

No real major work done to it... here's what I have done though:

Thermostat
Shocks and struts
Full brake job (pads, calipers, rotors, master cylinder)
A/C Condenser
A/C Compressor
A/C Accumulator
Left and right front axles (did both to eliminate a vibration)
Front wheel bearings
Lower control arm bushings
Alternator
Heater core (plastic pipes!?)

Other than that, just usual maintenance stuff. I use Mobil 1 and change the oil every 4k.

I recently got a 96 GASE 2.4 auto, shows 231000 on the clock. I just replaced the HO2S. It does have a GM rebuilt alternator. Car salesman said he thought the engine had been replaced but not sure. Can I tell by serial numbers? Would the engine number match the VIN?

Well it wasn't a GA, but a 99 Sunfire... Dad sold it to me 2 and a half years ago with just under 100k on it. I sold it 6 months ago with just over 150k (I love to drive, what can I say?).
While I had it I had
Countless Brake Jobs
A/C Compressor twice
Clutch (put in a stage 2, never had a problem again)
CD Player twice under warrenty then gave up and bought an aftermarket deck

Other than that, it was a great car. Went through 5 sets of tires it's entire life, and I changed the oil every 4.5k miles and put in synthetic blend high millage oil all the time. I'll tell ya. I beat the crap out of that car, but I took really good care of it at the same time. Like I got it dirty then dusted it off every night. I miss it so much...

Brakes are easy and not real expensive. The SES light may just be a sensor or possibly your gas cap. (best to get the code read at Autozone and get back to us.) I wouldn't give up on it yet. BTW, 134000 on my 2000.

I recently broke 180,000 on my '98 GA. Water pump, fuel pump (my own fault), A/C compressor and condenser (small leaks), heater core (cracked plastic pipe) and alternator are the only major malfunctions. Everything else has been expected, consumables type stuff (tires, shocks, control arm bushings, fuel filter, thermostat, brakes, spark plugs, battery, O2 sensor, etc).

that's right about where mine blew 2 years ago

Cam shaft bearing. Mechanic said it was 1700 to fix it or 2100 to put in an engine with 80k on it....decided to go with the engine.

Not to be a downer, seems to be a lot of people that have had good luck with this engine....just not me. Then again a teenage girl with a dad that knew nothing about cars owned it before me, I suspect it wasn't very well maintained.

~130,000 on the Grand Am,
Went through (sing to the tune of the twelve days of christmas)
16 lifters, 3 pistons, two cams, one camshaft housing, one tranny, one slave cylinder, two clutches, and 6 shift knobs (they keep gettin' stolen.)

On my '93 GMC Sonama with a chevy tailgate, and a chevy blazer grill,
it has 212,976 miles on it...and it's been through one tranny, and a ton of body damage, that's it!

My '96 SE has 166,831 and so far I've replaced the heater core, A\C comp, belt, tensioner assembly, thermostat (water outlet) housing, and the water pump (thirty dollar part, thousand dollar labor). I'm probably about to have to replace the oil pump and possibly the water pump again. If you have the automatic transmission equipped with ETS, then that provides a whole new set of problems, seeing as how it will undoubtedly go out and cause you to have to replace practically the whole front suspension. If you ask any mechanic that is willing to work on this Oldsmobile engine, they will unanimously inform you of exactly what they think it's worth. All of them I talk to affectionately refer to it as the "throw-away engine".
