I don't know if this has been posted before, but I recently swapped out my factory GA seats for Jbody seats and they bolted right in perfect. I pulled mine from a '99 Cavalier coupe, and they are SO much better (then what I had at least). They do sit about an inch higher than GA seats, but other than that I don't see much difference size wise. One important thing is the seat belt receiver end (the part you plug the belt strap into) is different on the Jbody seat. It is smaller than the GA one, so you have to reuse the old one. Mine was held on with a Torx bolt. I just swapped it. But this is only on the driver side, since the passenger side is attached to the floor.
I like the way these seats look. The look more sporty and have better bolsters on the sides. And they have the loop that holds the seatbelt next to the head rest, so no more breaking my arm to buckle up!
I'm not sure of all the years that can be swapped, but as far as GA's are concerned, I do know that 96-98 GA will swap with 95-99 Jbodys. (maybe 00-04 but not 100%).
I hope this helps someone that might be looking for a cheap upgrade and wants to stop sitting on the floor!
Bill

Hum, well I'm not quite sure how to post pics, but I definitly will when I figure out how. I wanted to show off my car anyhow.
Something I discovered today putting the finishing touches on the install. The trim that goes around the bottom of the GA seats, the driver side will screw right on like it's supposed to, but the passenger side does not. I will have to modify the plastic a little to get it to fit.

Photobucket.com and then just copy the IMG code and paste it into one of your posts. Very easy ;)

I'll have to do that tomorrow in the light. I'll snap some pics up.
I created a cardomain site for my GA thats got my stereo and wheel pics on it. I'll be updating it soon with other pics.
my link is http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2898992/1
If that doesn't work my name on there is wapnjtnvols

I apologize for not posting pics, and didn't think to until someone mentioned it. I'm not the most computer savvy, but I'm working on it!

Disregard my dirty car. But these are the '99 Cavalier seats I swapped in.

They bolted in perfectly. I have some Sunfire headrest that aren't vinyl that I'll be swapping out when ever I figure out how to take out the headrest without breaking them.

Why swap? I don't recall the seats in my 2 Sunfires being anything spectacular.

The Cavalier seats looks like they have alot more support than the Grand Am seats. They look comfortable

Kind of looks like a big clam waiting to chomp you when you sit down.

would this be the same idea on a 92-95? Also, do those seat belt clips come off the headrests? Cause the 92-95 seatbelts are attached to the doors.

I swapped them b/c my GA seats were busted on the bottoms and falling apart. They aren't anything spectacular, but they are a LOT better than what I was sitting on. I posted these originally to show that they bolted right in. They do have better side support, but nothing crazy great about them, just letting ppl know they will fit if they are in need of replacement seats for their GA. That all. Just sharing ideas!

I posted all about my swap about 10 threads down. It's titled "my new seats, etc." I'm not sure about the 92-95, but I don't know that there was much difference. Somebody on here know I'm sure. The seat belt loop does come off. It is a separate piece from the seat. It sits in between the seat and the headrest post.

OK, cool. :) I was just curious because I had such a hard time with the seats in both Sunfires. In both of them, part of the seatback frames had a weld let go, which resulted in the back of the seat giving zero lumbar support. I tried to fix it with strong zip-ties (removing the seat fabric was a PITA), but they'd break too after a while.

Good luck, and good job!

yes 92-98's all use the same seats and mounting hardware.

If your looking for a cool swap check out my 99+ grand am seat swap. There way better then cavi seats.

Jbody seats might not be that great but they have much better lateral support than 5th Gen GA seats. That was about the only thing I disliked about the interior on our '00 GAGT was the seats were very unsupportive under hard cornering. Even my truck seems to have better lateral support. I guess maybe I was just exteremly spoiled by the seats in my '84 Grand National.

That looks pretty good. So, would racing seats for a cavy fit just as good as those? :)

I like my 'seems-to-be-rare' factory sport seats. Never seen another GA with these in, but I think Matt or someone on here switched to them.

so will the j-body seat swap work easily for the 99+ GA's as they do on earlier models???

I drive a 2002 GA & a 2000 Cavi every day, and the GA seats are much nicer comfort wise.... but I have the same problem in both cars that shawn noted about his sunflower seats... I have a weld let go in the GA & in the cavi right now.... which actually makes the cavi easier to handle on long drives then the GA... since the weld thats gone on the GA has allowed the seat back to twist a bit, and the one on the cavi just made it loose a bit of support...

But when they are both fixed up, the GA is much more comfy

4th gen mounts and 5th gen mount are a world apart. Two totally different mounting styles all together. Can it be adapted to fit? Sure but custom work and fabrication will be needed.

hrm... cuz my drivers seat is busted up in 2 different places and the back support on my passengers seat is shot as well. ive been searching around and the cheapest stock GA seats ive been able to find are $150 each and ive seen sunfire/cavi seats for $55. im just wondering if it would be easier to just buy some racing seats (bomz most likely) and put my stock brackets on them

Not trying to hack a post but I had to ask.

What are you doing to or in your cars to bust the seats????

haha well for the pass seat there is a couple of springs broken in the back(not sure how many) but i can feel some poking through the back. and for my drivers seat i was in an accident and the plastic part that holds the foam in place on the base of the seat broke and now i have no support on my left side where i sit, and on the back the foam is pushing out of place to the left which is really making for uncomfortable drives

Interesting... those are the exact problems I have with my driver's seat. Two wires poking out the back and the foam on the left side becoming more and more disfigured every day. Oh, and now the seat motor doesn't work either. I've just about given up on fixing the thing, but we don't have very high class junk yards around here either. Everything I've found is either broken worse or has been sitting in the rain for months. Does anybody know where I can find replacements seat for a good price? OEM or aftermarket, whatever...

Thanks guys. I'm learning a lot here.

I test drove a 6, not bad but I didn't really care for them. Subjectively they may be more supportive/snug than the 99+ GA seats, but I prefer my Spec V seats and somewhat rare pre-99 sport interior seats over them. In other words, I don't think they are worth that amount of trouble.
