i was at a JL audio training session and heres what they said:
if you have a sub/amp setup. by adding another amp to your current sub you will gain 3 dB (nothing new).
if you add another sub to your amp (assuming same ohm load and power) you get 3 dB more as well. if your amp power doubles with a second sub, then you get 6 dB more.
a difference if 3 dB is actually not a huge difference. IE: if youre underpowering a sub, then dont max out your amp. it wont get much louder. what you think is louder is actually distortion thatll kill your sub and/or amp.
we listened to all kinds of tracks. you listened to a gain of 1 dB, 3 dB, and 6 dB. the 6 was most noticeable, 3 was barely noticeable, and 1 was HARD to notice if at all.
also, they noted that burnt voice coils arent covered by warranty, but they usually honor it anyway to teach the customer a lesson.
they laughed at me when i gave them my scenario. i have 2 10w6v2-d4 subs that are rated at 500 watts RMS. i have a 500 watt amp (500/1) runnign the pair. i said that i wanna add another 500 watt amp (500/1). they laughed at me. they said that i wont notice a difference. and if i remove one of my subs, ill loose volume. so im maxed out for my value. if i have a little extra money laying around then i can get my 3 dBs more, but itll hardly be noticeable.
