My sister has a 1999 Grand Am. She is currently having a problem. Ill break it down step by step and maybe you guys can help

Starts up fine.
Idles fine.
Drives a distance fine (about a 40 mile test drive)
Temp is normal
Shut the engine off.

Try to start it back up
It will "start"
Idle really rough
Engine dies.

Let it sit for a little while (30-60 mins)
Starts fine
Idles fine
drives fine
temp is fine

Any ideas?

I had that problem and after it was warm I had to give it gas to get it to start. Long story short went on and got worse for three years and them made a-lot of stupid problems. Turned out to be my fuel pressure regulator.

Ditto on the Fuel Pressure Regulator as the culprit, nless the SES light is 'on' (though you would have said so, right?).
About $50 for the part at Checker/autoZone etc., and 1/2 hour to change (though some are absolute PITA's to remove).

Hope this helps,

PS: I don't know WHAT that thread that Granam referenced was trying to say.
Nobody analyzed the problem, and coupe told everyone they were blowing smoke.

O2 sensor is another common failure that will cause warm-start problems.
