I was thinking of trading in my 3.4 liter 99 grand am se. I want to bring it down to a 4 cylinder. Are you able to get a 2.4Liter 2000 or 2001 in manual. If so, are there any kinks i should worry about with the engine so i get a car that i'm not going to have issues with. ? Thanks everyone for your help in advance!

I don't recall if this engine was offered that year, but definitely watch out for the water pump. It generally goes out around 50-60k miles and costs $$$$ to fix.

My buddy has a 2001 and it has the same 2.4L that my 97 has in it.

I don't know about the manual though, the only ones I have seen are autos. I don't see why they wouldn't offer them though. :)

Like he said, the water pump isn't fun. Mine went out at 78,000 miles and cost $450 to fix. That did however include a new gasket set, timing chain, and a radiator flush.

Other than that (and the GM alternators) mine has served me well thus far (82,000 miles).

96-98 ga's w/ the 2.4L had an isuzu 5spd...

99+ had a stick in 00-01 model year.. but now i'm thinking it was only in the 01 model year.......

the pre 99 2.4L motors had an EGR system while the 99+ did not
there was also a diffferent knock sensor between the two...

the intake runners on the 96-98 were smaller in diameter slightly than the 99+ models... in 99 there was no detuner lip.... 00-01 there was a detuner lip to keep things within the same power as previous 2.4 models...

there were also differences in the exhaust manifold, but I'm not exactly sure what they were... runner sizes changed I believe.....

also the passanger side mount changed a lil bit between the 96-98 to the 99-01 style.. :-D

there's your 2.4 FAQ of the day ;)
