Here's the scoop: About five minutes ago, I went out to my car to go turn in a job application. I started it, turned on my A/C to 2 (first time turning on my air in a while), and put it in reverse. I stepped on the gas a little bit (not flooring it or anything), because my driveway is kind of sloped down towards the garage. As soon as I put it in reverse and stepped on the gas, it made this terrible groaning/grinding sound from the front end and smoke came from what I think was the wheel area.

It was only a few whisps of smoke, and once I saw it and heard the noise I turned the car off (this was literally seconds after I put it in reverse).

We popped the hood, started it back up, I reversed it, we got underneath the car, looked at both brakes, etc, and found nothing wrong. There is a skid mark right on the driveway, leading me to think that for some reason my left front tire drug a bit (leading to the smoke I saw).

I went ahead and drove the car the mile and a half to the place where I turned in the application, and it did just fine - no evidence of anything out of the ordinary.

WTF.

What's strange is that the car is totally fine now. No idiot lights, the brakes are like they always are (crappy), and the motor runs fine. No fluids dripping or anything.

Oh well.

Sounds like the wheel was seized or something. Weird.

I'd pop off the offending wheel and thoroughly check the brake pads and the rotor as well as the wheel hub.

You were backing up a sloped concrete driveway, right?
So you gave it a bit too much gas, and the left front tire 'layed a patch'.

BFD.

On nearly every tranny, manual or auto, reverse gear is achieved by taking first gear and 'reversing' the direction, using another gear that further reduces the ratio.
So reverse is a real stump-pluller.

Finally, when you're goofing-around in a GA while going forward, the Trac Control keeps things under control.
Trac Control is a function of wheel-speed sensors, and they are part of the ABS.
I'm pretty sure ABS is 'off' in reverse, so Trac Control would also be 'off' prolly.

^^Wow. I can't believe I missed something so obvious. God I'm dumb.

Well that's good I guess. I won't be giving it that much gas anymore then. I'm surprised it actually left smoke though.
