Hey guys well im new here and i have a porter cable 7424 that my dad gave me from a yard sale. So since I got my car now and its black and you can really see every little scratch i ordered some pads and some compounds/polishes. I looked online and some stuff people did with this thing and i was just amazed so after a little reading i got to it. I hit it with the aggressive pad and Poorboy's SSR3. I went till the compound diminished completely. I wiped it off and noticed that nothing had changed... at all!. So i was thinking ok mabye i should just finish it up. So i hit it with the not so aggressive pad and SSR2. Diminished it... still nothing. So hit it with a finishing pad and SSR1. Followed by Megs new car polish. And to my amazement the car is exactly the same. I dont understand. What did i do wrong? I wasnt expecting much but im telling you if i had before and after shots you would probably think it was worse. Any ideas of what i could be doing wrong? Thanks!

How deep are the scratches? Do they catch your fingernail?

How big of an area are you working?
How fast is your arm speed?
What speed are you runing the machine?
How big are your pads and backing plate?

No the scratches arent big enough to catch my finger nail, ive read that as among other things. They are barley in the clear coat. im working mabye a 1 by 1 area slow and steady arm speed. Running on speed 5-6. 5 at first, then 6 when realized not working. Going in up and down then side to side pattern. Pressing with light pressure on my hood. My pads are 6 inches.

Thats very odd, they should come out easily

The best place to ask this would be autopia.org, you would get alot more opinions on what may be stopping you.
