1994 Corsica, lots of wetsanding & buffing (56K is a no go)

Picked up this little piece for dirty dirty cheap. All it needs is a lower intake gasket, no biggie. So I decided to recondition it, maybe I can sell it for a good price.

This is what I started with it:

The next thing to do was remove the pin-stripes, I hate those with a passion. I ran into a problem though like usual. The passenger side fender was re-sprayed with clear, the only problem is they sprayed OVER the stripes and then re-applied the stripes over top of that. Kinda funny to remove the pin stripes but they are still there lol

Removed by hand, residue removed with paint thinner:

On to the claying. It was obvious this vehicle had never been clayed….or even waxed.
This is ONLY a 1’x1’ section of the hood, the whole car was the same. This car single handedly trashed a 100 gram mothers clay bar, it was tossed after its job was done.

This is where things took a big turn. I did my usual half and half hood buff out, it did not go well.

I hit it with:
Optimum Hyper Compound
Edge yellow wool pad
Makita Rotary
2000 rpms

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d104/Rand81/detailing/Img_0505.jpg

It took many passes to remove what was there. So I decided to wetsand the rest of the vehicle……..every panel.

The fenders didn’t need so much aggression so I hit them same way I hit the hood. This is what I ended up with, fenders and hood:

DAMN rand thats nuts. good job man. my friend has a dodge avenger thats acctually worse then that in some areas. its so bad that the spoiler needs repainted. (or re cleared at least) im assuming that u used a block on all this stuff right? im thinking my friend and i might take up the project of reconditioning his car some day. so any pointers, ideas, or general rules u would be willing to share i would love to hear. thanks

No i used a megs sanding pad and megs unigrit paper.

Doing it by hand is time consuming and not a good idea when an entire vehicle needs to be done. But i dont own a pnuematic DA sander becuase most wetsanding jobs are just small areas, nothing needing a machine. This one i just got drunk enough and upset enough to hit it by hand.

I do not recomend doing this to an OEM paint job. The only reason i did it is becuase i want to sell it and becuase its highly unlickely it will ever be buffed again.

I assume that you are experienced in detail work. I've never been very good at detailing and wondered if my car being an 04 would be ok to wax and, if so, what's a good brand to use. Later, QD.

Im not a detailer, i recondition and/or finish automotive paint systems.

As long as the paint isnt more than 90 days old you can wax it. New vehicles do not count.

I don't understand the difference. I'm not being an http://www.gaownersclub.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_censored.gif here, either. As I stated in between the other bs, I respect the work you did. I don't think I could do that. Later, QD.

Coupe,

Thats a hell of a Job. Car looks friggin sweet now. Maybe a little tire shine and the car will look 10x better I think.

Quickdodge,

Although I don't agree with the way coupe went about it I do have to agree with him in that it is kind of annoying. Although it never bothered me enough to say anything to you about it. That is the purpose of having signatures, so you can write stuff like that and it will show up in all your posts...

Now both you guys please talk any future discussion to PM's. this type of thing doesn't need to be handled in the public forum.

This has been off this thread and in PMs now. As you can see, I'm shifting the subject back to the topic at hand. As for my "tag," I've done this on every forum I've been on for about 6 years now. I don't really see myself stopping now. But it's cool. Later, QD.

A detailer really just cleans a vehicle.

I recondition and/or finish paint work. Meaning i REMOVE scrathes (if possible) and REMOVE swirl marks and/or imperfections from the paint work. I also finish what body shops cannot OR if you wanna save money i finish the paint work after the body shop has sprayed.

Rand, I might have to visit you after I paitn my truck. Spraying I'm cool with, however it's the wet sanding that scares me.

I do have a '95 GASE out back, maybe I'll practice on that. My father inlaw had it for 7 years, it's in rough shape now.

Yep. I heart Corsicas. My mom bought one brand new in '91, and we had it for 10 years and 175,xxx miles. Most reliable car I've ever seen. :D

car looks amazing.. can someone shed some light on wet sanding? I am not clear on how that's done without damaging the paint.. wish my car could look like that!

coupe

Its not something i can really teach you how to do on the internet.

Yes, the act of wetsanding does damage the paint, thats why it has to be compounded and polished after it is wetsanded.

Looks amazing...I saw this over at autopia. I think I'm going to buy a PC 7424 soon. I'd really like to learn how to "correct" my paint. Although there are so many freaking products and pads out there it just gets confusing.

http://www.autopia-carcare.com/pcdepot.html

Do you recommend buying one of those kits? My car is black so of course it is full of swirl marks. Its not terrible, but the usual on a 4 year old car that is just occasionally washed and waxed.

I think autogeek.net has much better kits, take a look at those. I also recomend getting the UDM, its not much more $$ and worth it.

So... 100$ + ~25 (Paint restoration product cost) = 125$ cost.

900$ sale price - 125$ = 775$ profit.

Nice.
