I have a Kenwood Head unit. I had it in my old 99 grand am se when i was in a car accident. The stereo was still working after the accident but i could not turn it off for some reason. When i picked it up a week later at the yard, it looked fine but i didnt try turning it on.
Now im trying to install it in my 2001 GAGT and it takes a different wiring harness. I bought the wiring harness that does not require the chime wiring. I plugged everything in and nothing happens. its dead. the red light flashes like it has power and it even lets me put cds in and out. however, theres no display and none of the buttons work. Its just weird because it was working at the accident. Any comments or suggestions on this? im not sure if the head unit is broke or its something else when i installed it. maybe disconnecting the battery and reconnecting? Idk help!!! :(

Check the fuse in the back of the headunit?

Im thinking its broken if you can put cds in and take them out but nothing else works. Its getting power so everything else should cut on also...try taking it in to a audio shop and see what they can do.

heres something else, tonite i just went to the store and bought a brand new Kenwood head unit and hooked it up and its doing the exact same thing as the other one. has power but no display or anything else. fuses are fine. am i not wiring it right or something. I used the non-chime wiring harness and spliced the wires correctly and plugged them in. nothing works. Its almost like im missing something or theres some certain harness im supposed to be using.. How did you guys hook up your head units in your 01+ GAGTs? Im thinking it has something to do with the monsoon stereo. the moonsoon has like 2 rows of pins all the way across in the back where it plugs in. the harnesses i have been getting only have 1 and a half rows of pins where it plugs in. Someone please help? its driving me insane because 2 different head units are doing the same thing

Hmmm thats confusing if it has power then the display should cut on. Get a multimeter and check the 12v lines and make sure theres actually power going threw them. I read the other thread and your right about the moonson system. I believe the speakers are 2ohms(not 100% sure) and most decks only run on 4 ohms but I dont think that would cause a problem where the display wouldnt turn on, you just wouldnt have no sound unless that caused the deck to blow both times...smell anything burning anywhere? Try just plugging up the power wires if theres power going through them and disconnect the speaker connections.
Edit: Yea Im reading on other forums that if you try runing 2 ohm speakers on a 4 ohm deck your more than likely to blow something..

no burning or anything. theres no way i blew 1 good head unit and 1 brand new head unit out of the box. its something with the wiring and the amp.

yea thats what Im saying because of the wiring is different with the monsoon system everything is running at 2 ohms and most aftermarket decks aren't able to handle anything below 4 ohms so if you want to use that deck in your car you would have to buy speakers of 4 ohms ratings(mostly all speakers besides subwoofers) and most likely have to run new wiring throughout the car and throw out the amp. But yea Im not saying that the decks are fried Im just saying that if the headunit tried to run on your current system then you would most likely blow a fuse or something internally. If you got a buddy with a aftermarket system try pluggin your Headunit into there car and see if it works. But I still recommend taking a multimeter to the wires and see if anything is going wrong with them, Power and Ground.

a guy was asking me if i had the blue wire with the white stripe on it connected. i just looked and i never connected that specific wire. its supposed to be the amp control. would this have any effect?

No.....The remote wire does not have any effect on the display of the headunit.....The remote wire is just what you stated...a turn on switch for the amp. If you want to get anywhere with this you need to test your wires and go from there and unless you already changed out the speakers you dont need to be trying to play your deck unless you want to blow it(unless its already blown). Check the constant 12v wire, ign switch 12v wire, and make sure you have a good ground. If you dont want to do that then take the headunit out and connect it to a 12v power source(i.e. take the red and yellow wires to the positive and black wire to the negative) If you see the display then something is wrong with the connections in the car.

what can the power source be? would it work if i used my car battery?

That is weird. the speakers shouldn't have anything to do with it though. the display will come on as soon as the power is connected, you don't need anything else connect for the main functions to work, just the red, yellow, and black wires. yes you can just use your car battery to test it. not 100% sure on this, someone correct me if i'm wrong, but aren't you supposed to run a new power wire from the battery for the deck if you use the wiring harness without the chyme?? and you don't have to get new speakers. your deck will run just fine since it's the amp that is running your speakers, the deck is just sending to the monsoon amp.

whoa check this out. i tried your idea and connected the wires to my battery. IT LIGHTS UP AND EVERYTHING! i just cant figure out why it wont work when i plug it into my wiring harness in the dash.
I heard that if you have a 2001-2005 with the monsoon system you have to use the GMOS-04 harness. is that true? I also read this link saying that you have to run a new power line to some kind of fuse that turns on when the ignition is turned on. im thinking this that is if you do not choose to use the GMOS-04?
