i had just picked up a 00 sunfire for a winter car. i was messin around wirth it one day and if i try to burn out it wont. if i try tranny drop and rev the motor up it wont let the rpms get high enough. why does this do this and is there a way of getting by it.

... tranny drop?!?! ... DAMN, I hate it when people do that :( ... anyway, ignoring that part of your comment, it is just the computer controlling the rev limit so as to protect the engine ... for example, my GA does it being I can rev it over 3300 (or so) when it park or neutral (unless I am coasting in neutral, then it will rev above to wherever I want :D) ... seriously, forget the tranny drops as they are bad news on the tranny :(

You will learn very quickly that your winter *beater* will become the most important vehicle you own.

if your trying to do burn outs in a sunfire, I suggest you first pour tranny fluid over the front tires and a nice puddle behind the tires, then drive ahead a bit, then stop, drop it in reverse, roll back, then slam it in drive with the foot to the floor.... you will leave lots of smoke.... most of it will be from places its not supposed to come from.... like the pile of busted metal that used to be your transmission....

Neutral dropping is not something you want to do.
If you want a good example of how much doing this tears a car apart, look at pretty much every 5.0 Mustang. Half of them I could probably beat due to their dropped-to-death trannies.

Im Trying To Avoid Tranny Drops Thats My Whole Thing I Have Heard Of This Thing Called Drive By Wire. All I Want To Kno Is If It Can Be Bypassed I Have A Header Back Custom Made Exhaust And I Just Wanted To Kno If This Can Be Done. So If I Can Get A Straight Answer From Someone That Would Be Great. Not All The Added Extras.

:wtf: are you talking about? Drive by wire? Do you even know what that is? :shake:
Quite simply, your car does not have enough low-end power to break the tires loose. If you're hell-bent on doing burnouts with your Sunflower, you're going to either A) Increase power output, B) Decrease traction, or C) practice transmission-destruction neutral drops as described in your first post. All of which will lead to excessive wear and likely premature failure of various parts & components, such as your engine, transmission, CV joints, not to mention your tires.
In short, you're 22. Stop acting like you're 16.

Why not just brake torque if anything? Can't be as rough as a Neutral bomb. Turn off traction control aswell.

Sunfires don't have traction control.

Basically what everyone is saying is no, you can't really burn out in a 150hp FWD automatic car without creating a big transmission problem, unless you are force-fed or above, I dont know 200hp.
My 5 speed 97 GT couldn't hardly burn out unless I redlined it and popped the clutch (also a big no no)...even then it was just one of the tires spinning for a couple seconds. Definitly not something to show off or be proud of.
Sorry man :(; winter will be here soon and you can spin the tires all you want without a tranny drop.

Yep. Although I regularly end up chirping tires while shifting, a burnout is not something I can achieve.
FWD's are not burnout vehicles unless they're modified enough to overcome the extra traction the drive wheels have over their RWD counterparts. RWD's have their drive wheels on the (Generally) light ass end of the car, so they do not require nearly as much torque to break loose.
Anyways, the 2.4L Twincam (Or the even less powerful 2.2L 2200 engine if you have that instead) are not drive by wire. Electronic Throttle Control is implemented in newer GM vehicles, but not in the older ones like your Sunfire.

yo people seriously cant burn out? assuming yall got 2.3's or 2.4's, i can do a dry burnout with mine with no problem whatsoever. yes, its an auto, yes, it has some minor topend work. but reguarless when the car was still stock, i could still throw smoke.... just my $.02

The discussion above is referring to a 2.2L 8-valve engine mated to a 4-speed auto in a Sunfire. Your Grand Am is a different beast altogether.

You've driven a 2000 Sunfire with traction control? Hmm, my '96 and my '01 didn't have it.

Yup, Trina's parents have a 2000 Sunfire, and it has it, even has an "ETS" button, and Trina has a 2000 cavalier that has it as well, but does not have the button, you have to put it in 1 or 2 and the "trac off" light comes on, or pull the e-brake 1 click.

Hmmm, I could be wrong then. There's a first time for everything. :kidding:
1. Find wet road
2. Pull ebrake
3. ???
4. Floor it
5. Profit
You could try a simple brake torque but I doubt your car has enough power to overcome the brakes.
ok well, in that case, my '90 with the 2.5 didnt have balls for power to do it either...
ONLY with at neutral drop.... which i didnt do but once or twice,,,,

Couldn't you just keep the parking brake on and step on the gas? I thought that was how everyone did burnouts in fwd cars.
Personally though, I wouldn't bother burning down the tires on a car that needs good traction in snow...

I would expect this sort of question on a Honda forum, but not here.
If you need to ask a forum how to perform a burnout in your FWD, you ought not be doing them.
Just my two cents.

ok i have given up on the burnout. i just want to kno now how do i get rid of the rev limiter and what this drive by wire is and does this car have it.
sunrunner_pei
11-07-2007, 07:26 AM
No your car does not have drive by wire. And the only way to get rid of the rev limiter would be to have the PCM custom programmed. Not worth it at all, you're just going to kill your engine. There is a reason for your rev limiter.
More info on 'Drive by wire': http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drive_by_wire

Drive By Wire (DBW) is a new thing used on newer modern cars.
It replaces the throttle cable setup with an electric signal from the accel pedal that is sent to the throttle body, which in turns tells the TB to open up a certain amount.

This would have been a great thread to bring up muffler bearings or torque fluid levels...
matts

better leave the rev limiter in. i know someone that removed it, and it was BAD.
they blew their kinuter valve totally OUT the front fender. locked up their muffler bearings too, which in turn, blew the welds on the intake and fried the piston rings.
the "mad scientists" had to tear it apart and replace everything. they had to overnight parts from japan from some supplier....it was pretty costly

I wouldn't remove the rev limiter, it keeps you from taking the engine's RPM beyond the redline, and will destroy your engine. You can remove the speed limiter however, but you need to have tires rated for higher speeds (Your stock tires are only good for about 112mph.
