View Full Version : Low coolant light....damnit
:( Low coolant light flashed the other day....I didn't think much of it because it just flashed for about 2 seconds then turned off. Anyways, the overflow tank was empty so I filled it up today, took 1/2 gallon. Not that I have looked, but I haven't noticed any stains under my car where I park. Nor have I noticed any loss of power, and I just got 30mpg mixed on my last tank....so my car is obviously running fine. But I'm expecting the worse and just guessing the LIM is leaking and will need to be replaced. I'm at 62k miles and I know its never been done to the car. Who wants to take bets? :whipped:

A slow leak wouldn't leave any noticeable puddles.
I've had a leaking heater core and a leaking return hose. Check around all of the coolant passages to see if you see coolant anywhere in the engine.
Check the oil. If it's OK, and you still can't isolate the leak, send an oil sample to Blackstone Labs (http://www.blackstone-labs.com/). Their basic $20 analysis will tell you whether there's any coolant in the oil.

Check the oil for contamination (milkshake), then look along the LIM and under the throttle body for small puddles of coolant.

Clean your engine bay too, especially where the LIM shows leaks. This will let you know how old the leakage is and it won't be covered in dust.
