This car is seriously starting to get on my nerves.

A month back, I was getting a P1122 error. I was getting 2k rpms on idle and the transmission was shifting very hard. I swapped out the throttle position sensor and changed the transmission fluid and it settled down until this week.

My engine is now throwing a P0172 code only.

My idle when cold is still up to 2k rpms. Once it warms up, it settles down to around 950-1100 rpms. It shifts fine. However, once it is warmed up, it will sometimes stumble down to around 400 rpms...but will not die. When not idling, you wouldn't think anything is wrong.

I've done a lot of googling and heard that the EGR could be the culprit and easily cleaned. I whipped out my Haynes book and found the section on removing it. I take the air resonator off and filter housing out. The only picture doesn't state what engine it is for, but does show the cap for the brake fluid container. I went to NAPA's site to see what it looked like for my engine...and I cannot find anything that looks remotely similar. Where in the hell is this thing?

If anyone else has any suggestions for the P0172 code and what is happening to the rpms at the different temperatures...I'd love to hear them.

thanks.

Edit: the car has about 108k miles on it.

you won't have an EGR I believe. The 2.4's in the newer GA's don't have EGR valves. If you did it would be to the left of your intake manifold(driver's side of engine bay). It will kind of burried but still in view. Should have a ribbed metal hose coming out of it.

nice, I'm glad Haynes documented that part!

Well after I put the resonator back on and the air filter housing, the light has gone out and no more stutters. :???: It still idles at 2k+ when it is cold, but does settle down once warmed up. I'll keep rolling the dice. Two more years and the wife gets her doctorate degree.

I wonder if the IAC is dirty? Some google results say that this could cause a high idle. There is some gunk in the throttle body. I'll give it a shot with some carb cleaner.

To close this thread out, I took the IAC off...hosed it down with carb cleaner and scrubbed it clean with an old tooth brush...it drives like a new car.

2000 rpm can't be any fun :(

Thanks for reporting back,
