View Full Version : Anyone like Caprices? Here's my '96.

It's got the 5.7L LT1 engine (similar to the '92-'96 Corvette) and exactly the same as the '94-'96 Impala SS. It's mostly stock except for a home-made cold-air intake and some cosmetic changes (I painted the chrome parts to body color, and/or removed chrome parts altogether. It also has the Impala SS spoiler and grille. The rims are 15" from American Racing). It seems to have an extra strong LT1 because it ran a 14.90 quarter mile as is (Most Caprices/Impala-SSs run low- to mid-15s with this almost stock configuration). I'm thinking about adding an aftermarket exhaust because it adds a good 20 HP (and torque) to these cars, but I love the Caddy-smooth quiet as it is now, so I'm torn.

It handles amazingly well for such a big car because it has the Impala SS sway bars and front brakes (the Caprice was available with the the B4U performance option that included the LT1, and other Impala-SS/police-car performance parts). It's a really great car for a family. It's so roomy and you feel really safe in it because of how big, wide and heavy (4000+ lbs.) it is, plus it has most of the modern safety features (dual front airbags, ABS brakes, side-door beams, automatic headlights).

Thanks for the compliments guys!

Impala clone anyone?

Well, that's part of the reason I didn't want the Impala wheels. It would have REALLY looked like I was trying to clone. As it is, I didn't put on any of the Impala badges, the hood, or lower it, or change the interior, etc. It's also not one of the three Impala SS colors.

See above about the Impala SS wheels.
I've always liked these AR wheels.

Looks good, as matt said, clean and straight. Is it a 9C1 package?
I agree about the wheels, the 15s looks real small on the large car.
Some impala wheels or simular 18"s would look hot with a altitude adjustment. :)

i love those cars. im really an impala fan, and i want one so i can drop in an LS7.

i agree with the rest, impala wheels would be a nice improvement, and id even put on impala tails. you said you already painted the chrome trim, good job that chrome is just ugly.

id also convert the interior. i see nothing wrong with cloning an impala SS as long as you dont badge it as one. the impala just looked better.

so are your coolant hoses green? wasnt that the B4C option?

It's not a 9C1 (police package). The B4U was just a way for a civilian Caprice buyer
to have the option of performance while still looking like a Caprice (as opposed to the Impala SS). I guess some older people (who were the main market for the B-bodies) preferred all that chrome and the more plush interior. The major thing that's missing from the B4U compared to the 9C1 is the rear disc brakes. The 9C1 (and Impala SS) have a heavier duty frame too. The B4U was actually the fastest B-body
offered because it's the lightest with the same engine.

The 9C1 package got you the green coolant hoses (lifetime guarantee).

Kind of like the Buick T-Type is to the Grand National. :D

There are a few people on impalassforum.com that have dropped
LS2s (with 6-speed) into their cars, but it's a huge job requiring cutting the frame and fabricating custom engine mounts to make it fit.

I was going to paint the chrome around the taillights black (That's what the Impala's are...many people with older daily-driver Impalas have noticed that the black paint started to peel off and was chrome underneath), but the problem is what to do with that center chrome strip under the Chevy bowtie.
You can't just remove it because it has three holes in the trunk lid to fasten it on there. I've seen them painted body color and it looks awful. It just cries out, "Someone forgot to mask me at Earl Scheib." Painted black looks even worse. So I leave it chrome. However, with that chrome piece there, the blackened taillights look dumb. It's all a very tangled web.

id also convert the interior. i see nothing wrong with cloning an impala SS as long as you dont badge it as one. the impala just looked better.

My interior is blue with wood grain highlights which I like. The only Impala SS interior was light gray with some black highlights which I found boring (I had a '96 Impala SS at one time then sold it, bought this for less than half the cost and invested the remainder into a house). I do wish I had the leather seats though.

so are your coolant hoses green? wasnt that the B4C option?

The Camaro B4C was the police Camaro. The 9C1 was the police Caprice.
The B4U was not a police car at all.

thats a bad ass ride right there. My friend had a 9C1. It was black with tan interior. Very fast car but for some reason it was a PITA to get a distributor for when it went bad. I know the cap and rotor are around $140 ish IIRC and the distributor itself is about $300 or more new.

nice caprice, very clean and i like the wheels.

did someone say 9c1?30319

here is my under funded project car 1994 9c1(cop car), lt1. it has the sewer pipe/ hockey puck cold air intake. it is a fun toy that i can fit the whole family into. b-bodies rule:D

no donking allowed:lol:

This is not my daily driver; it is funny that i am looking for a 4 cyl.5-speed 2002-2005 grand am/ alero as a daily driver. I know what you mean about being torn between the two. I love the big a**ed, and fast rear wheel drive cars, but in all practicality & MPG the GA is a better daily driver.

my friend has a '74 caprice i believe. he painted it himself and has some outlaw 1's (american racing rims) it was a light blue but he painted it (suppoed to be deep almost black blue, but the shop got the wrong paint so its deep blue, but not almost black. it runs real good (and he just turned 18 lawl)and he loves it. i dont care much for older cars except i did find one when i was lookin for cars. it was a 70 somethin buick skylark custom, man it was nice but it had a bunch of problems. brand new crate 350 with under 100 miles and they wanted 1000. i wish i could have gotten it :( but what made me not was i guess the owners before them were teens and they used it to screw around in and put a plow on it and plowed parking lots

its been like 12 years, after that he got a '95 impala.....i love/hate driving it, love it cuz its just plain out awsome, but hate it cuz im scared of wrecking it cuz then im dead lol...all my friends who ride in it want it

but yeah i do agree, it looks pretty nice

Nice Cap. I used to have a 91 a few years back (damn I miss that car) it had a 305 w/700R4. I put a chip in, K&N, Bosch platinum +4's, Accel Super Coil, and 8.8 wires. All said and done that thing moved like it had a 350.

90's Implas/Caprices make really nice sleepers or nice car done up right i do agree with most i think it need a set 17 inch rims no more than that to give it a nice look and feel
