View Full Version : Second Gear Wheel Spin?

Driving a 2001 Grand Am GT Coupe,with an auto trans, and I notice if I hit WOT the 1-2 shift seems to give me what I think is wheel spin. I hope its wheel spin and not my transmission.

I guess what I'm trying to get at is, Is this wheel spin normal? or should I be concerned??

It doesn't give me tire chirp, but I feel slight vibrations in the steering wheel, I would believe thats the vibration from wheel hop.
I hope this is normal.

I'm not there, so it's very difficult to diagnose over the Internet. However, I would think if it was wheel spin that there would be some tire chirp along with it, assuming dry conditions. It would very well be a transmission problem.

When I had my neon, and I hit WOT I would get a shudder in the steering wheel and no tire chirp.. It was my tranny dropping

I just bought this car, I hope the Trans isn't going. I wouldn't call it a shudder, just a small vibration in the steering wheel. It doesn't vibrate at every1-2 shift just at WOT.

What does the tach do during the shift?

Since I've only had the car for a day,l and I don't have it with me right now, I can't say for sure what the tach does. I guess I'll have to wait to get the car back from the mechanic. But I'm gonna go up there and see if he knows anything.

You've had it for a day and its doing this? How did you buy it? Private or retailer?

My tranny slips like hell at the 1-2 WOT shift. Hence why I haven't gone WOT in months.

Might be slipping. The GA, AFAIK was not too bad on wheel hop.

Seems to have gotten better. The tach is normal, i'm not bouncing off red line or anything. Now I can't get me SES light to shut off. Going to get the checked out after school.

mine revs up between 1st and 2nd but i know my trans is slipping i am just hoping it lasts till winter i have another one with 35k on it.

with it spinning like that it should have some torque steer....even if it don't have any tire squaling noise. i've had tires before that would just spin....barely make a noise other than a whirring noise.

it's been a while since i've drove a FWD car that will go into 2nd that hard. but in my AWD (on wet pavement) you can tell when the fronts aren't hooking. the front will slide around.

does it hit a rev limiter? like shawn said, it's hard to tell over the internet
